Effective Advocacy for Animals

by Bay Area Vegetarians bayareaveg.org (http://www.bayareaveg.org/contact.htm)
Learn the techniques and skills to be an effective advocate for vegetarianism and the animals. Both activist skills and activist rights will be covered in this workshop presented by Bay Area Vegetarians, a grassroots, all volunteer 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to building, supporting, and connecting the vegetarian and animal rights community in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Bay Area Vegetarians' Compassionate Living program examines and presents information related to vegetarianism and living a compassionate lifestyle. Please note - starting this year, this program happens on the 2nd Sunday of every month in SF.

This month we will have an interactive workshop session on

Effective Advocacy for Animals:

Activist Skills - Leafleting, Letter Writing, Tabling

Activist Rights for Animal Rights

Activist Skills: Educating the public about the WHY vegetarianism is a compassionate choice and HOW simple it is to eat veg is the goal for effective public outreach via leafleting and tabling. When it's done well, these both look very easy to do. And they are! Letter writing is another highly effective form of activism, yet one that too few people do or feel comfortable with. Letters to business leaders, legislators, or other key decision makers, letters to the editor, letters to your family about your decision to go veg -- all can have a powerful and far-reaching impact to help animals.

Activist Rights: While we can learn the skills to be activists, activism can often be daunting from a legal perspective - what are our legal rights? Learn your basic rights under California law as an activist, and your right to speak out for animals in a variety of circumstances (e.g., KFC sidewalks, shopping malls, college campuses, on the web) -- so you can feel comfortable and confident when you do.

This will be an informative and interactive afternoon for folks who are new and want to learn, those looking for a refresher or different strategies, as well as experienced folks who want to share strategies to help animals.
