State Assembly Committee Chair Criticizes Sutter at Hearing on
Hospital and Non Profit Status

Should hospitals be nonprofits?
Oakland Tribune, December 8, 2005

"Should hospital chains that pay their executives seven-figure
salaries and have many millions of dollars in surpluses be able
to call themselves nonprofits?

That's the tricky question posed by Assemblyman Johan Klehs,
D-San Leandro, chairman of the Assembly Committee on Revenue and
Taxation, and other representatives at a hearing in Oakland
Wednesday.

Van Johnson, longtime CEO of Sutter Health who stepped down in
June, received nearly $2 million a year salary. The CEO of
Sutter's Novato Community Hospital in northern Marin County
makes $425,000 a year. That hospital provides $199,000 a year
in charity care, he said.

'It doesn't seem very charitable,' Klehs said."

Hospitals' tax status scrutinized
Contra Costa Times, December 8, 2005

"Much of the committee's focus was on Sutter Health, which owns
27 hospitals in Northern California. Nine of the 20 California
hospitals with margins above 10 percent are affiliated with the
nonprofit hospital chain. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee also
is investigating Sutter's nonprofit status."

Reviewing hospitals' nonprofit status a good idea
Modesto Bee, December 1, 2005

"In a review prompted by a union complaint, the Stanislaus
County assessor's office concluded that Memorial, a nonprofit,
should pay taxes on office space used by a for-profit collection
agency and a construction management firm.

The larger question raised by the union had to do with whether
Memorial provides enough care to poor people in our community."

Union, Alta Bates Summit to resume contract talks
Oakland Tribune, December 11

"After reaching agreeable contract terms that settled a
two-month strike at California Pacific Medical Center in San
Francisco, union representatives are turning their attention to
East Bay hospitals and hoping to win similar concessions for
their workers.

SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West, which represents 4,500
workers at nine Sutter Health hospitals in Northern California,
has asked to meet with officials at eight hospitals where it
still has contract disputes."
