We are planning a very exciting Benefit Concert this Spring for the Highlander Center in Tennessee. We have a great script which begins in the 30's when they helped communities organize mostly non-skilled jobs for the new CIO and then in the 50's and 60's when they trained folks to go all over the south and teaching literacy particularly to African-Americans so that they could vote. Rosa Parks was one of the activists who was trained at the Highlander Center. This Center was one of the only places in the south where people of different races could sit down together and strategize. The center went on to help communities to organize against toxic waste and strip mining and now is involved with Immigrant Rights. The script includes wonderful labor, civil rights and immigrant rights songs.
Join us as we present this wonderful material with the Vukanee Mahetu Chorus (South African) and the Sacred Heart Gospel Choir.
We meet at City College, Creative Arts 214, every Thursday night 6:30 to 9:30pm starting starting January 19, 2006.
At Laney College in Oakland, we meet every other Saturday 12:30 to 4:00pm on the stage of the Theater, starting January 21, 2006.
COME ONE, COME ALL.! Onward and Upward!
