British newspaper alleges Israel is planning a military strike on Iran

by wsws (reposted)
An article in the British-based Sunday Times last weekend provided details of Israeli military plans for a strike on Iranian uranium enrichment plants that would dramatically inflame tensions throughout the Middle East. According to the report, based on unnamed Israeli intelligence and military sources, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon recently ordered the country’s armed forces to be ready for an attack by the end of March.
The article entitled “Israel readies for strike on nuclear Iran” has of course been officially denied by Israeli government spokesmen. However, even while disclaiming specific plans, senior Israeli defence ministry official Amos Gilad told the media: “One cannot say that any option for the future is being ruled out.”

The report comes in the context of repeated public threats against Iran by senior Israeli officials, and alarmist allegations that Iran is on the brink of producing nuclear weapons. As the Sunday Times noted, Sharon himself recently warned: “Israel—and not only Israel—cannot accept a nuclear Iran. We have the ability to deal with this and we’re making all the necessary preparations to be ready for such a situation.”

The Sunday Times not only gave a timetable but indicated the extent of preparations. “The order to prepare for a possible attack went through the Israeli defence ministry to the chief of staff. Sources inside special forces command confirmed that ‘G’ readiness—the highest stage—for an operation was announced last week,” the article stated.

“A ‘massive’ Israeli intelligence operation has been underway since Iran was designated the ‘top priority for 2005’, according to security sources.” The newspaper claimed that Israeli intelligence had identified new Iranian nuclear facilities through “cross border operations and signal intelligence” from a base in northern Iraq.

The Sunday Times also pointed to the type of operation being prepared—a combined air and ground assault using special forces units and long-range F-15I fighters that have been especially equipped with large fuel tanks to reach targets in Iran and return without refuelling. The Israeli bombing of the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak in 1981 involved just one undefended target. An attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would be more difficult as there are a number of targets and some of the most significant are underground.

§Hamas threatens to step up attacks if Israel strikes Iran
by Haaretz (reposted)
TEHRAN - Hamas will step up its attacks on Israeli targets if Israel attacks Iran, the militant group's chief-in-exile Khaled Meshal said on Thursday.

"If Israel attacks Iran, then Hamas will widen and increase its confrontation of Israelis inside Palestine," Meshal told reporters in Tehran, where he has held three days of talks with top political and security officials.

On Wednesday, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan Halutz said Iran will be capable of enriching uranium within the next three months, but will have to overcome many technological obstacles before reaching the nuclear "point of no return."

"Iran is determined to obtain the technological capability that will allow it to produce a nuclear bomb, but numerous obstacles remain in its path," Halutz told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. "Even if the Iranians pass the uranium-enrichment stage, they are still a number of years away from building the bomb."

"An Iran with nuclear capability is a global problem," said Halutz. "It will be difficult to impose sanctions on it, and the problem could arise of the transfering of `dirty bombs' to terror organizations."

The International Atomic Energy Agency board of governors is slated to convene on March 6 to discuss imposing sanctions on Iran, Halutz noted.

Former finance minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week that Israel should take "bold and daring" action to thwart Iran's plans for nuclear armament, citing Israel's 1981 air strike on a Iraqi nuclear facility.

"The Iranian threat is an existential one, as it is a country that declared its plans to destroy Israel and is developing the tools to carry out this destruction. In this regard, I will continue the legacy of Menachem Begin, who thwarted Iran's neighbor, Iraq, from acquiring nuclear weapons by adopting bold and daring measures.

"I believe that is what Israel needs to do," Netanyahu told Israel Radio.

In 1981, Begin ordered an air strike on Iraq's nuclear facility in Osirak, near Baghdad. As a result of the attack, Iraq's nuclear armament plan was thwarted.

On Tuesday, Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, encouraged Palestinians to continue their struggle against Israel. Iranian television reported that Khamenei told Meshal that "the experience of the last 50 years teaches that negotiation with the Zionist occupation doesn't improve the situation. We will achieve victory through the struggle only."

Praise for Ahmadinejad's anti-Israel comments

Meshaal also praised Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for recent comments in which he called the Holocaust a myth and said Israel should be moved to Europe or North America.

"Those were brave and true remarks and it is what the Islamic nations say, especially the Palestinians," he said.

The European Union and Israel condemned Ahmadinejad 's remark, with the German foreign minister adding that the comment denying the Holocaust will affect Iran's nuclear talks with European negotiators later this month.

The Palestinian group Hamas will step up attacks against Israel if it takes military action against Iran.

Khaled Meshaal also praised Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, for his "courage" in having dismissed the Holocaust as a myth and calling for Israel to be moved out of the Middle East to Europe or North America.

"Just as Islamic Iran defends the rights of the Palestinians, we defend the rights of Islamic Iran," Meshaal told reporters in Tehran on Thursday. "We are part of a united front against the enemies of Islam.

'United front'

"Each member of this front defends itself with its own means in its region. We carry the battle in Palestine. If Israel launches an attack against Iran, we will expand the battlefield.

"We are part of a united front, and if one member of this front is attacked it is our duty to support them."

Israel and the US accuse Iran of using an atomic energy drive as a cover for weapons development, which the Islamic republic denies.

Ahmadinejad has increased alarm in the West after calling for Israel to be "wiped off the map". On Wednesday he drew fresh condemnation after denying the massacre of Jews during World War II took place.

'Courageous declarations'

Meshaal said: "We congratulate Iran for its position in the Islamic world and in particular the statements of the supreme leader [Ayat Allah Ali Khamenei) and President Ahmadinejad.

"What Iranian officials say may not please some people, but these are just courageous declarations.

"The Muslim people will defend Iran because it voices what they have in their hearts, in particular the Palestinian people."

On Iran's nuclear programme, he said: "Even if Iran's programme is military, what is the problem? Why do other countries like Israel have the right to have a nuclear weapon?"
