“‘The Nazis bring hate to our city and we have to protest that," said Susan Purviance, 49, of Toledo who joined the anti-Nazi demonstrators.’
Toledo police said 700 law enforcement personnel had been deployed, including state police, sheriff's deputies and police from surrounding communities.
"We want to say to the non-white community: we hope that you do something about the criminal subculture," said one neo-Nazi speaker.
“I‘f those problems are not handled by the black and Hispanic communities they will be handled by the white community.’”

“Hundreds of officers stood guard to make sure there was no repeat of the October melee as about 30 white supremacists shouted at counterdemonstrators and held placards, including one reading "White race, stand up and take back your neighborhood."
More than 100 others showed up in the freezing weather to protest against the members of the National Socialist Movement.

The counter demonstrators, chanting slogans and carrying signs reading "Go home Nazis" and "Stop the hate now," were kept behind barricades about 75 yards from the area where the neo-Nazis were cordoned off.”
About a dozen counterdemonstrators were arrested for minor offenses, Navarre said.

“Before the rally even got underway, police pulled over a car in west Toledo with Illinois plates. The four people inside were apparently headed downtown to the protest. Inside, police found sling shots, and other items of concern. All four people were arrested.
In a news conference after the rally, police and city officials said there were 25 adults and 4 juveniles arrested, all on misdemeanor charges. 7 people were arrested for violating the protection order signed Friday by a Lucas County Common Pleas judge that limited where people could protest. In that case, all 7 were at a library branch in west Toledo preparing to rally on their own.
City officials say 3 people were charged with carrying a concealed weapon, and in all cases it was a knife. The other charges were disorderly conduct and inciting violence.
The Toledo Police Department estimates it paid a total of $300,000 in overtime costs for its own officers, and officers from dozens of other police departments who helped out.”

“Hundreds of police officers from across northern Ohio along with state troopers have been mobilized to guard against another riot fueled by a neo-Nazi rally.
City leaders fear protesters of the neo-Nazis will try to rally somewhere outside the downtown demonstration and incite more trouble.
A Lucas County judge granted the city's request Friday to block the neo-Nazi group and counter protesters from rallying beyond the downtown government building's grounds.
This time, the rally will be about two miles from the racially mixed neighborhood where the original march was to take place.”

“A Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge yesterday gave Toledo police the authority to arrest any neo-Nazis who try to march in a residential neighborhood today.
Police plan to restrict access to the area bounded by Adams and Superior streets, Constitution Avenue, and Spielbusch Avenue to Michigan Street, starting at 8 a.m. The rally is from 2 to 4 p.m.
City officials said the order also applies to any other group - such as anti-Nazi protesters - who try to meet in a neighborhood away from the rally zone.”

Gearing Up for Nazi Rally
12.9.05
“Police Chief Mike Navarre said neighborhood residents were angry the last time that the white supremacists were going to be allowed to walk through the neighborhood and shout insults.
"It was about protecting their turf," Navarre said. "We let somebody on their turf."
A mob that included rival gang members turned their anger toward police after they canceled the march because they said the neo-Nazis tried to change the time and route of their protest. The mob looted and burned a corner bar and smashed the windows of a gas station. Twelve officers were injured and 114 people were arrested.
Adding to the chaos were hundreds of people who came out of their homes to join the fray. This time, anyone attending the rally will go through security checkpoints.
City leaders say what they fear most is that protesters of the neo-Nazis will try to rally somewhere outside the downtown demonstration and incite more trouble.”

Civic, faith groups must join to battle hatred
By REV. LARRY C. CLARK

"The North Toledo neighborhood that was the Oct. 15 center of the confrontation between neo-Nazis and hundreds of counter protesters is one of Toledo's most integrated. It has many finely kept houses, a strong neighborhood association, and a proud history. It is hardly the kind of place one would expect a riot.
Yet here I watched a landmark neighborhood bar go up in flames as hundreds of people were hanging around. Most of the people I met along Central Avenue were shaking their heads in disbelief. The anger and frustration of so many young people caught most by surprise. Over and over I heard people ask, "Why did they allow them (neo-Nazis) to come into our turf?" Residents felt that their rights and community had been violated."

Neo-Nazi Security Measures
December 10, 2005
http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/story?section=local&id=3712891
“Security measures are in place for today's planned Neo-Nazi rally in downtown Toledo. The city is requiring the demonstrators and any counter protestors to organize at One Government Center. No cars will be allowed inside police limits. And people can only enter on foot through metal detectors.
At six this morning they already had cement barriers in place, which will create a perimeter around One Government Center, the site of the rally. The streets that will be blocked off include Consititution Street, Adams Street, and Spielbusch Avenue.”
Now in addition to the closed off area around One Government Center, several other closures are in place for today.
As a precaution, the main branch of the Toledo Lucas-County Library on Michigan Street has decided to close. Government buildings will be closed and all visitation and programs at the Lucas County Jail are cancelled. Tarta buses that normally line up on Jackson Street every 70 minutes will instead use Jefferson Avenue between Erie and Summit Street.”
