REPORTS AND NEWS ABOUT TOOKIE
- EDUCATORS FOR TOOKIE PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY!
A press conference today will announce the nomination of Stanley Tookie
Williams for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, and the support of more than 500
educators nationwide urging Governor Schwarzenegger to grant clemency. Among
the speakers will be Philip Gasper, initiator of Educators for Tookie; and
Barbara Becnel, executive director of the Neighborhood House of North
Richmond and co-author of Stan's anti-gang children's books.
Professor Gasper and fellow educators are calling attention to Stan's
work as a global peacemaker who has campaigned to stop gang violence and
prevent children from joining gangs. In addition to nominating Stan for the
Nobel Peace Prize, Professor Gasper worked with Professor William Keach of
Brown University and the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, a national
grassroots anti-death penalty organization, to reach out to fellow educators
nationwide in an initiative called Educators for Tookie.
The press conference will take place at 2 pm at Notre Dame de Namur
University, Quad (next to Campus Center, 1500 Ralston Ave., Belmont Calif.
If you have contacts with the Bay Area media, please let them know about
this event.

- WHAT STAN WILL DO WITH THE REST OF HIS LIFE
>From the NAACP: Stanley Tookie Williams said in a soon to be published essay
titled What I Will Do With the Rest of My Life that if he wins clemency he
will partner with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP) on programs aimed at persuading at-risk youths to avoid
gangs.
Williams said, "In the beginning, redemption was an alien concept to me.
However, while in solitary confinement, during 1988 to 1994, I embarked upon
a transitional path toward redemption. I underwent disciplined years of
education, soul searching, edification, spiritual cultivation and battling
my internal demons. Though I was loathed for being the co-founder of the
Crips, my redemption caused me to repudiate my gang leadership role, to
repudiate any affiliation with the Crips or other gangs."

- THE ERRORS IN STAN'S TRIAL
>From the Contra Costa Times: What the jury saw was a muscle-bound hulk in a
4X jacket. What they heard about was barbaric: two cold-blooded robbery
murders within 12 days, four dead and a suspect who was said to laugh
hysterically as he mimicked the gurgling last breaths of one victim.
Who they heard it from: an alleged accomplice granted immunity, a
jailhouse informant, an acquaintance with a checkered criminal past, a
friend who later claimed police beat him into testifying.
A police expert tied a shell casing from one crime scene to a
slide-action 12-gauge shotgun owned by Stanley "Tookie" Williams, but there
were no fingerprints, no pictures, no bystanders to finger him. And no DNA
that could bolster or silence his claim of innocence.
A quarter-century later, the trial that landed the Crips gang co-founder
on death row draws renewed focus as his Dec. 13 execution date nears. While
his backers highlight his tale of atonement and anti-gang outreach from
prison, debate over his 1981 prosecution is bound to play out in the Capitol
on Thursday as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger entertains his case for clemency.

- IF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA KILLS TOOKIE
>From BlackNews.com columnist Earl Ofari Hutchinson: The dangling question in
the raging debate over the fate of Stanley "Tookie" Williams is what if the
state kills him? Though President Bush didn't specifically mention Williams'
pending execution, he recently took the occasion of the execution of a North
Carolina inmate, to publicly declare that the death penalty saves lives.
Death penalty opponents vehemently dispute that. They say that it's
inhumane, and ineffectual. Victims rights groups say that killing Williams
and other killers bring closure to the family members of the killer's
victims. Many in the media worry that with passions running white hot over
the case, Williams' execution could spark violence, and turn him into a
martyr.
These are hotly debated and disputed points. There is no evidence that
killing Williams or any of the other 1,000 men and women that states have
executed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 has deterred killers
from killing. Eighteen of the twenty states with the highest murder rates
impose the death penalty. Seventeen of twenty big cities with the highest
murder rates are in death penalty states. Michigan and Indiana are next door
to each other. One has the death penalty (Indiana), the other doesn't
(Michigan), and two decades later their murder rates have remained fairly
constant.

my guess is that Schwarzenegger will do a midnight last minute stay. He has always had a fluid political position, and he hired that democrat to straighten his image out after this past election. The consequences if he gave clemency wouldn't be that bad because he could just give a speech where he's harsh on crime and says Williams should spend his life in jail bla bla, but he could look worse with more consequences if he let him die. I could be wrong. Also, it's December and he's a x-tian
