Adding to the city of Mountain View’s woes since Wal-Mart came to town more than 5 years ago, local police were called to the store when fights broke out over discounted HP laptop computers. A discount of $22 per computer was enough to trigger a “significant police response that was deemed appropriate considering the number of people inside the store at the time of the incident,” according to police spokesperson Jim Bennett. 13 officers were dispatched to the big box retailer.

By contrast, the Peninsula and San Jose Raging Grannies, who have protested at the same store 5 times in the past few years, have never caused local police to spend a minute’s time or money. This photo taken in 2004 shows orderly, though raging, Grannies demonstrated peacefully at Mountain View Wal-Mart. (photo courtesy Charles "Chuck" Slay)
