Moving the Movement: Transportation Justice 50 Years after Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott Community Event

December 5th, 2005, 4:00-5:30pm Frank Ogawa Plaza (in front of City Hall) Broadway & 14th Street, Oakland

Rain location: First Unitarian Church; 685 14th St. @ Martin Luther King Jr. Way

On December 1, 1955, tired and weary from a long day of work, Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man and 4 days later the Montgomery Bus Boycott began. Today for many low-income communities of color in the Bay Area region and across the nation, access to reliable, accessible and affordable transportation remains an unmet need.

Join Urban Habitat and our transportation justice allies for a community event to talk about the transportation justice movement in the Bay Area. Hurricane Katrina¿s devastation of the Gulf Coast region highlights the fact that there is still much to be done in achieving transportation equity and justice and the reality that in many low-income communities, municipal planning is not meeting the needs of its most vulnerable residents. We hope you will join us in honoring the memory of Ms. Rosa Parks and be part of the unveiling of the new issue of our journal Race, Poverty and the Environment ¿ Moving the Movement: Transportation Justice 50 Years after the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Featuring the Joy Gospel Choir, performers, speakers and more

Speakers/sponsors: Reverend Elliot, Allen Temple Chair of Clergy Caucus OCC; KidsFirst!; Ella Baker Center for Human Rights; Public Advocates, Equal Justice Society & Urban Habitat
