REPORTS AND NEWS ABOUT TOOKIE
- RALLY FOR STAN AT SAN QUENTIN DRAWS 1,000 PEOPLE
On Saturday, some 1,000 people rallied outside the gates of San Quentin to
call on Gov. Schwarzenegger to grant clemency to Stan Tookie Williams.
Rapper Snoop Dogg was the featured speaker among several dozen religious
leaders, anti-death penalty activists and other supporters of Stan. Barbara
Becnel, Stan's advocate, introduced the rally and was one of several MCs.
The multiracial crowd consisted of activists from various anti-death
penalty organizations, religious groups, the Nation of Islam, political and
social justice organizations, community action groups and gang intervention
organizations. The message from all was clear: don't kill a peacemaker.
Project Cry No More, a group made up of family members who have lost loved
ones to gang violence, was represented by a speaker at the rally, and is
part of the growing number of voices calling for clemency for Stan.
The rally made front-page news in many California newspapers. Below are
three stories.

>From Tom Kerr, published on CounterPunch: "I write this letter on faith that
you are not, at core, the Terminator, for we know that the Terminator would
not hesitate to execute people in cold blood, and my appeal to grant
clemency to Stanley "Tookie" Williams would fall on deaf ears. As you know,
Crips co-founder, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and writer, Tookie Williams is
scheduled for execution on December 13, 2005. I write with the conviction,
rather, that you identify with Kindergarten Cop-hard when necessary, soft
when humanity requires it."
