DISASTER CAPITALISM:
Accumulation and Mutual Aid in the Era of Katrina.

With Azibuike Akaba, Rebecca Solnit and Joel Kovel

New College Theater

Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Avian Flu, Global Warming. Are we living in an era of accelerating natural and social disasters? How are corporations and governments contributing to and profiting from these disasters? And what lessons can we learn from the autonomous organization of communities in disasters past and present?

An outstanding panel will explore these questions.

Azibuike Akaba has done extensive environmental work in Louisiana and many other places. He is currently the Community Technical Assistance Coordinator for the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project

Rebecca Solnit is the author of many books and article, including "The Uses of Disaster" in Harpers magazine, October, 2005.

Joel Kovel is the editor of the journal "Capitlism, Nature and Socialism" and the author of "The Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or the End of the World".

Free and open to the public.

Sponsored by New College Department of Activism and Social Change and New College Center for Education and Social Action.
