Was the 2004 Election Stolen?: A Debate on Ohio One Year After Bush's Victory
A year later, questions remain over the outcome of the Ohio election and whether George W. Bush fairly won the state and the presidency. We explore some of these questions with a debate between Mark Crispin Miller and Mark Hertsgaard.
There were widespread reports of voter intimidation; suspiciously long lines in heavily Democratic areas; faulty voting machines; mishandled absentee and provisional ballots; election results that contradicted exit polls…and then there were the electronic voting machines. For years critics of these machines have warned that they could be manipulated in ways to fix elections.
Last week the Government Accountability Office – the investigative unit of Congress – issued a major report on the safety of electronic voting machines. Although the report has received little attention in the corporate media, its findings have startled critics of electronic voting. There are three main problems the GAO found with the machines: First, some electronic voting systems did not encrypt cast ballots or system audit logs, and it was possible to alter both without being detected. Second, it was possible to alter the files that define how a ballot looks and works so that votes for one candidate could be recorded for a different candidate. Third, vendors installed uncertified versions of voting system software at the local level.
The GAO concluded, “some of these concerns were reported to have caused local problems in federal elections – resulting in the loss or miscount of votes.”
* Mark Crispin Miller, author of “Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election and Why They’ll Steal the Next One Too (Unless We Stop Them).” He is a professor at New York University and author of several other books including "Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney’s New World Order" and "The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder."
* Mark Hertsgaard, investigative reporter who recently examined the 2004 election for Mother Jones magazine. He is the author of many books including "The Eagle’s Shadow: Why America Fascinates and Infuriates the World" and "Earth Odyssey: Around the World in Search of Our Environmental Future." He is also the environment correspondent for The Nation and the political correspondent for LinkTV.

New York University professor and author Mark Crispin Miller says in an interview on Democracy Now!: “[Kerry] told me he now thinks the election was stolen. He says he doesn't believe he is the person that can be out in front because of the sour grapes question. But he said he believes it was stolen. He says he argues with his democratic colleagues on the hill. He said he had a fight with Christopher Dodd because he said there's questions about the voting machines and Dodd was angry.”

Hey knuckle dragger! What is like to be so lacking in discussion ability that all you can do is troll?
Nevermind, you don't have to answer that.
You're dismissed as you are irrrlevant and tired.

Kerry thinks the election was stolen . . . but is afraid to say anything because it will be considered sour grapes . . . another typical effort to please everyone, those who are angry about the election without angering those who Senate Republicans who let him get his pork barrel patronage for Massachusetts
and, don't forget, the Democrats, short sighted as usual, set themselves up for this with their hysterical efforts emphasizing how Gore got a majority of the vote in 2000, and how that indicated that he should have been President, thus derailing any prospect of claiming that a candidate, Kerry, who lost nationally by 3,000,000 votes, should now by President because he was lucky enough to win the electoral college battle anyway (if you accept the premise that Ohio was stolen)
in any event: Earth to Kerry: you sold out everyone by refusing to contest the Ohio results despite having all this money and all these resources to do so
just go back to trying to figure out if you are for or against the occupation of Iraq, and spare the rest of us your inane comments

I am informed that Kerry has issued a statement backing out of this claim completely.
You have to read the entire press release below, it's everything, I mean EVERYTHING, that is wrong with the Democrats, and why I am starting my own political party. We shall be called the Vertebrates, and we shall pillage and destroy.
Here is the so-called statement. Read carefully and with a sack of some kind over your nose and mouth so when you vomit it doesn't clog up your keyboard.
"A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) vehemently denied that the
senator had told a popular liberal author and journalist that he
believed the 2004 election was "stolen" in response to queries from
RAW STORY.
The author, New York University professor Mark Crispin Miller, told
Democracy Radio the senator had told him at a fundraiser Friday that
he believed the election was stolen after Miller offered Kerry a copy
of his new book, Fooled Again. Miller said that he was invited to the
event by Peggy Kerry, the senator's sister.
Kerry's campaign quickly denounced the claim.
"I know Mr. Miller is trying to sell his book and he feels
passionately about his thesis but his recent statements about his
conversation with Senator Kerry are simply not true," spokesperson
Jenny Backus said. "The only thing true about his recollection of the
conversation is that he gave Senator Kerry a copy of his book."
Miller told Democracy Radio Kerry "told me he now thinks the election
was stolen. He says he doesn't believe he is the person that can be
out in front because of the sour grapes question. But he said he
believes it was stolen. He says he argues with his democratic
colleagues on the hill. He said he had a fight with Christopher Dodd
because he said there's questions about the voting machines and Dodd
was angry."
Miller was shocked to hear of Kerry's denial.
"I call that contemptible," Miller told RAW STORY. "That's completely false."
"Anyone who knows my work knows that I'm not much interested in
commercial gain," he added. "I wrote Fooled Again out of a sense of
civic obligation, and I had thought the senator shared that concern
with me."
Backus said Miller should be standing behind Kerry's effort to pass
the Count Every Vote Act.
"If Mr Miller wants to prevent the problems that happened in Ohio
moving forward into 2005 and 2006," she said, "instead of
misrepresenting what Senator Kerry said, he should be complimenting
Kerry for leading the way in Congress with the Count Every Vote Act to
improve voting rights and fund the election reform effort across the
country."
"I think, frankly, that he is making a very serious mistake by taking
this tack, because as I tried to tell him last Friday night, the only
way that he can redeem himself in the eyes of most Democrats is to
take the lead on the issue of election reform, and that requires
speaking honestly about what happened last year."
Backus said Kerry would have fought to reverse the election's outcome
if he believed the election had been stolen.
"Make no mistake, after pouring his heart and soul into the campaign
and seeing George Bush continue the mess he created, if the election
had been stolen John Kerry would be fighting them today to reverse the
outcome," she said.
