Buy Your Gas at Citgo: Join the BUY-cott!
Looking for an easy way to protest Bush foreign policy week after week? And an easy way to help alleviate global poverty? Buy your gasoline at Citgo stations. And tell your friends.
Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush."
Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. In SF : Geneva @ Bayshore

2. Lynne Stewart defense alert
3. Joan Mellen, author of "A Farewell to Justice: Jim Garrison, JFK's
Assassination, and the Case That Should Have Changed History," to be
interviewed on WBAI's "Law and Disorder" program.

1. Taking Aim with Ralph Schoenman and Mya Shone returns to regular

WBAI-NY 99.5 FM and http://www.wbai.org for live Internet stream.

Our topic: The Hidden Agenda of the Fitzgerald Indictments

---
2. Lynne Stewart defense update:
Judge Koeltl upheld the verdict against Lynne Stewart. (The
judge also upheld the verdicts against the two other defendants,
Ahmed Abdel Sattar and Mohamed Yousry) In a 54-page ruling that
recounted key evidence, U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl rejected
all of Lynne Stewart's arguments that the Feb. 10 verdict should be
tossed out. In a separate ruling Judge Koeltl also rejected defense
request for a new trial based on allegations that one juror lied
about his past and that another juror had been unduly pressured to
reach her verdict.

These decisions clear the way for the sentencing now scheduled for
December 22.

SAVE THE DATE
December 8, 7 p.m., a Speak Out and Forum on Lynne Stewart's case
will be held at The Community Church of New York. Details and
participants to be announced.

The Defense Committee has a new DVD, "The Struggle Continues" for a $10
donation; T-Shirts for $15.00; as well as the NLG booklet: The Case of Lynne
Stewart, a Justice Dept. Attack on the Bill of Rights. Available via the

"A Farewell to Justice" by Joan Mellen
Amazon.com Reader Response: Eddie Kasica (New York City)
***** (five star-top rating) Saint Joan, October 27, 2005

The United States of America has never truly had its equivalent of Zola's
"J'Accuse!" Until now. While the Dreyfus Affair is a joke compared to the
far-reaching PERMANENT effects of the National Security State execution of
President John F. Kennedy(don't think they're permanent? -- pick up the damn
newspaper), quite a few books on the crime have been labeled Zolaesque:
"Rush to Judgement", Weisberg's "Whitewash", Sylvia Meagher's "Accessories
After the Fact"(a worthy forerunner of "Farewell to Justice" -- Meagher and
Mellon are sisters of heart, toughness and understanding), Anthony Summers's
"Conspiracy" and, of course, Gerald Posner's "Case Closed"(just kidding).
But they weren't. Not even close, because they couldn't be. The cover-up of
the crime continued well into the 1990s and -- like the film or not -- it
was Stone's "JFK" which caused the break in the dam. The wave of the past 10
years, beginning with the publication and media-embrace of the malignant
"Case Closed", has been intensely anti-conspiracy. As all of U.S. society
has seemingly moved toward the worship of power for power's sake, leading to
the establishment of the Bush Reich, anti-conspiracy ideology has become its
own form of totalitarianism. In the power-saturated universe of Millennial
America, seething with plots, anti-plot pronouncements have become as
necessary as squeals in a slaughterhouse. But, there has been a counterwave.
And it's now tidal. More fresh evidence regarding 11/22/63 has become
available these past years than was available to the Warren Commission, Jim
Garrison or the House Assassinations Committee when they were conducting
their investigations or cover-ups. We have had to be patient, and now it's
pay-off time. Christopher Lawford on the family, Gareth Porter on JFK and
Vietnam, Bradley Ayers and Richard Whalen on Kennedy and Cuba, Gerald
McKnight on the Warren Commission, and David Talbot's coming book on Bobby
and the murder(`though the Mellen book may have made that release somewhat
compromised).

"Farewell to Justice" is the book we have all been waiting for, since the
day the music died. Joan Mellen has always been one of the world's best film
critics, a magnificent biographer(Kay Boyle, Marilyn Monroe & Bobby
Knight!), and a great writing teacher. Now she has broken the case. There's
no guessing here. No theoretical chapters on the validity of the Zapruder
Film, the DalTex Building vs. a sewer drain opening, no jacket holes or
bullet fragments. Just the moment-by-moment narrative of what happened to
Jack Kennedy 42 years ago. And, best of all, why. The names are all here:
the initiators, the designers, the middle-managers, and the mechanics.
Mellen is also overwhelming in her recapturing what was really happening in
the early 1960s United States. Not only those who care not about history
relive it. As Americans, all of us relive Dallas every day of our lives.
Everywhere we look, we can see the ghost of John F. Kennedy - and the
shadows of the men and women who killed him. There is only one way to
finally let him rest in peace: a cleaning-out from power of all those
directly and indirectly responsible for his murder, and all those who have
knowingly benefited from it. Germany could only put the ghosts of the Third
Reich to rest through a complete de-nazification. The United States must do
the same.

There is also sadness in this book too, for those of us who see the Kennedys
as true heroes. (And they are.) Mellen has solved many, many mysteries in
the book. One of the most startling is her clinching the case as to whether
or not Robert Kennedy knew of plots to murder Fidel Castro. As Mellen
demonstrates, his involvement went way beyond mere knowledge. By answering
this question, she also answers the questions as to why the Kennedy Family
has been so forceful in impairing post-Warren investigations of the crime.

Mellen's passion, brilliance, understanding, writing talent and
just-plain-sleuthing-genius has resulted in a book which will change
history. The corporate media will no doubt try to burn her at the stake.
They will fail. Because there is no answer to this book. Except justice and
revenge. ###

# Wed Nov 2, 7pm Santa Rosa Oil Awareness Meetup Group

We are focused of promoting awareness of our society's utter dependance on petroleum and natural gas, limited and non-renewable resources. What happens when the cheap energy is gone? We saw what happened when hurricane Katrina disrupted oil production and the flow of goods and services in the region. What happens when the transportation and economic networks begin to break down on an even larger scale due to dwindling resources and sky-rocketing production costs? What can we do as individuals to circumvent such a disaster and raise awareness of the impending crisis?

The Santa Rosa Oil Awareness November Meetup
Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at 7:00PM
At our next meeting, we hope to shift the focus from the "problem" of peak oil to solutions. How do we promote awareness of this impending crisis (without looking like a poster child for the lunatic fringe)? What can we do to protect ourselves and our families? How do we start building community, localize the production of necessary goods and services, and create sustainable lifestyles? What are the concrete survival skills we need to cultivate in the absence of centralized government guidance? Please come to share your experience and concerns. Feel free to bring a snack or beverage to share. Our next screening of "The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and The Collapse of the American Dream" will be held on November 16th at 7 PM at New College in Santa Rosa.

Join us for a book event with author Heather Rogers, who wrote "Gone Today: The Hidden Life of Garbage."
The United States is the world capital of garbage: with just 5 percent of the planet's population America generates 30 percent of it’s trash.
In "Gone Tomorrow" journalist Heather Rogers guides us through the grisly, oddly fascinating underworld of trash. Excavating the history of rubbish handling from the 1800s—an era of garbage-grazing urban hogs and dump-dwelling rag pickers—to the present, with its brutally violent mob-controlled cartels and high-tech "mega-fills" operated by multi-billion-dollar garbage corporations, Rogers investigates the roots of today's waste-addicted culture, pointing toward solutions that dare to go beyond municipal recycling. # November 3rd Day of Action to Save Ancient Forests
http://www.kleercut.net/nov3events

Kleenex sells 180 billion sheets of tissue paper each year and NOT ONE
of them has any recycled content. They can make a tissue that stops the
spread of the flu but they can't make them out of something besides
10,000 year old forests? Kleenex even goes as far as to boast on their
website that their tissues are made from 100% virgin fiber. Kleenex and
parent corporation Kimberly-Clark are felling ancient forests to flush
them down the toilet. Phooey!

More than 90,000 folks have sent messages to tell Kimberly-Clark and
Kleenex to change their ways. We know that Kimberly Clark is wiping out
ancient forests for disposable tissues, but we need your help to spread
the word and STOP the destruction.
**
Join Greenpeace and other groups for an *International Day of Action on
November 3 rd *. Visit the day of action events center at
*http://www.kleercut.net/nov3events?lst* to find and RSVP for an event
in your area, or list your own event!
**
If you can commit to flyering for an hour at your local grocery store,
list it so others can join you. Every flyer, poster, phone call and
petition signature turns up the heat on these tissue tyrants. We ve put
together a downloadable day of action kit with everything you ll need,
including event how-to s, flyers, posters, and petitions.

On November 3 rd , tell your neighbors, your friends, your family, and
your local grocery store shoppers that buying Kleenex is blowing away
one of the oldest and rarest forests on Earth.

Feel free to email usa kleercut net if you
have any questions or need advice. And be sure to check out

# Follow the Yellow Brick Road Nov 3rd artists reception 5:30 -8pm free

A one time only chance to experience a temporary environment by San
Francisco artist Joe Mangrum. Joe will transform the space into a 4
dimensional, immersive environment. There will also be on view
selections of photo documents from 11 years of installations some
published for the first time ever.

Joe Mangrum's installations have been shared with audiences both
internationally and locally. He attended the Florence Biennale in
2003, where he received the prestigious Lorenzo de Medici award in
"New Media", for his striking piece, "Fragile". Joe has also been
nominated locally for the SFMOMA "SECA" award. An alumnus of The Art
Institute of Chicago, Joe began his training as a painter and moved
towards installation art, as he explored different mediums and
influences.

Many of Joe's recurring themes explore our relationship to modern
life juxtaposed with our organic natures and desires for freedom. Joe
examines the indomitable power of creation in relation to the grid of
imposed structures of cities and hegemonies of power constructs. He
often employs the use of iconographic and spiritual forms such as the
mandala and the pyramid in surprising configurations.

Documents of 11 years of his installations can be viewed at
http://www.joemangrum.com Many of these photographs are the subject of a
comprehensive, forthcoming book to be released in the Fall, 2005

# Stanford Demonstration for Compassion
Friday, Nov. 4 at 12:00 noon Palo Alto
Intersection of El Camino and Quarry Between Menlo Park and University Ave,
Where Stanford Shopping center ends and more Palo Alto begins
Map: http://tinyurl.com/b4lxt
Animal Rights on the Farm (ARF!) commemorates the Dalai Lama’s visit to Stanford University by urging compassion for the tens of thousands of animals used in experiments on our campus. Join us for a demonstration against animal testing, this Friday, November 4 at 12:00 noon at the intersection of El Camino and Quarry Road (http://tinyurl.com/b4lxt). For more details, or to get involved in the campaign against vivisection, email arfstanford [at] yahoo.com. See below for more facts on animal experiments at Stanford.

“According to Buddhism the life of all beings—human, animal or otherwise—is precious, and all have the same right to happiness. For this reason, I find it disgraceful that animals are used without being shown the slightest compassion, and that they are used for scientific experiments.”
-The Dalai Lama, Beyond Dogma
__________________________
According to a report filed by Stanford in 2002 with the US Department of Agriculture (the agency charged with implementing the Animal Welfare Act), Stanford used the following animals for experiments: 32 dogs, 172 hamsters, 376 rabbits, 323 nonhuman primates, 110 sheep, 541 pigs, 2 goats, 9 ferrets and 471 gerbils (2,036 total animals). Because USDA does not require reporting on mice, rats, birds, and amphibians, the actual number of animals used at Stanford is much higher. Nationwide, rats and mice make up approximately 95% of animals used in research. Using this statistic, we estimate that Stanford’s RAF uses as many as 40,000 animals. The Research Animal Facility at Stanford University received over $146 million in federal funding in 2003 for animal experimentation, ranked 21st in the country.

Animal Rights on the Farm (ARF) has discovered other disturbing facts: one Stanford researcher systematically deprives mice, rats, and monkeys of sleep to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation, body weight, and energy expenditure (Role of Hypocretin in Metabolic Effects of Sleep Loss, NIH Grant #5R01MH073435-02); another separates infant primates from their mothers to test the resultant psychological effects (Maternal Availability and Postnatal Brain Development, NIH Grant #5F32MH066537-03); another induces anxiety and fear in parasite-infested rats (Parasite/Host Interactions and the Neurobiology of Fear, NIH Grant #1R21MH070903-01A1); another conducts gene-therapy research on the livers of rats, rabbits, and dogs (Transferring Integrase Technology to Animals, NIH Grant #5R01HL068112-05); another researcher has spent the last 15 years conducting invasive brain studies, maternal deprivation experiments, and stress studies in squirrel monkeys (Model of Hypercortisolism for Major Depressions, NIH Grant #5R01MH047573-14); another researcher induces stress in adolescent squirrel monkeys primates, then addicts them to cocaine (Early Chronic Stress and Prefrontal Development, NIH Grant #5R01DA016902-03); the list goes on and on.

ARF has also gleaned the following information from the research facility’s newsletters: the labs’ “animal caretakers” filed over 421 morbidity reports in 2001 (Comparative Medicine News, Jan. 2002); the University maintains a colony of inbred mice, “obtained after 20 or more consecutive generations of brother x sister mating” (Comparative Medicine News, Dec. 1999); RAF has been infested with mites, which cause self-mutilation and “blisters, crusts and warty lumps on the ears, eyes and nose” (Comparative Medicine News, Apr. 2002); the facility’s euthanasia procedures include CO2 gassing, followed in some cases by exsanguination (bleeding to death), cervical dislocation, or decapitation, and “[t]horacotomy (making an incision into the chest cavity) after apparent death from CO2 is widely used as a way to ensure the irreversibility of the procedure.” (Comparative Medicine News, Oct. 2003).

movement. Kevin is one of the SHAC7, the activists currently facing
federal criminal charges for operating a website on the campaign

will address direct action in the context of other progressive social
justice struggles, including the immigrants' rights and anti-war
movements. This panel and conference represent an important
opportunity to build coalitions with other struggles against
oppression.

The panel is free and open to the public. However, if you plan to
attend several panels, or the keynote lunch with address by the ACLU's
national executive director Anthony Romero, please register at

animal experimentation at Stanford, which is at noon at the
intersection of El Camino and Quarry Road. Make this Friday an animal
rights day in the South Bay!

# Victoria's Dirty Secret - Int. Day of Action Nov. 5th Santa Cruz
Victoria's Dirty Secret - Nov. 5th, Capitola Mall
Date sent: Fri, 28 Oct 2005 15:54:44 -0700 (PDT)

Victoria's got a dirty secret! No, it's not crabs or
the fact that she has a body rarely found in Nature.
The company, Victoria's Secret, mails out over 395
million catalogs a year -- more than 1million a day --
on paper that comes from virgin timber, much of it
from Canada's Great Boreal Forest. Come on over to
Capitola Mall on November 5th, from 3 - 5pm and show
your forest love in an international day of action!

Facts About Victoria's Secret

"I believe a company like ours should be a source for good. For us.
For our communities. For the world."
-Les Wexner, Chairman & CEO, Limited Brands

So much for that idea!

Victoria's Secret, part of Limited Brands, claims to be a good global citizen.
Yet by mailing more than a million catalogs a day, the company is leading
the way in global forest destruction.

What You Should Know About Victoria's Dirty Secret:

*Approximately 395 million catalogs are mailed by Victoria's Secret each
year -- that's more than one million a day.

*Most catalogs end up in the trash or recycling -- often without even being
looked at.

*Almost all of these catalogs are produced from virgin fiber paper with
little or no recycled content.

*Paper for these catalogs is destroying Endangered Forests like the
great northern Boreal forest of Canada.

Victoria’s Secret is not satisfied with just stripping the Boreal, it is also
destroying forests in the Southern U.S. The Southern U.S. is one of
the most biologically diverse regions of our country where nearly six
million acres of forest are logged each year, primarily for the production
of paper.

Indigenous people are being negatively impacted by the logging and paper
production industries. Native plant and animal populations are being
destroyed by logging and processing operations and the pollution they
create.

Because of its immense buying power, Victoria's Secret is in a position
to help change the catalog industry toward sustainable paper purchasing.
The company has refused to make commitments to protect our Endangered
Forests.

What We're Demanding of Victoria's Secret and Limited Brands:

*End purchases from any company that is not identifying and halting
logging in

*Endangered Forests in the Canadian Boreal;

*Maximize post-consumer recycled content in catalogs (achieve 50%
post-consumer recycled in five years);

*Ensure that all suppliers are shifting to Forest Stewardship Council
certification;

*End the use of any forest products sourced from other Endangered
Forests, such as key areas of the Southern U.S.

*Reduce paper use!

How You Can Take Action:

*Come to Capitola Mall on 41st Ave. for the International Day of Action,
Nov. 5th, 3-5 pm. Have fun and bring a spare chainsaw. For more
information, contact lowtechhealth [at] riseup.net

* Visit http://www.victoriasdirtysecret.org or http://www.forestethics.org
to learn more about this and other related campaigns, and how to take
other actions to help protect forests.

Tea, Writer and Intuitive Counselor Jessica Lanyadoo, Women’s Choice Clinic

In January 2005, 5,000 anti-choice activists marched in San Francisco streets, funded by the San Francisco diocese and pseudo-feminist groups like "Feminists for
Life"
In May, Operation Rescue, harassed gynecologists at the Convention of the College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist at the Moscone center and harassed a gynecologist in her own neighborhood in Oakland, because of her much-needed work helping to provide late-term abortions at a abortion clinic in Wichita Kansas.
In July, “The Crusade for Life” targeted Planned Parenthood up the coast and harassed Planned Parenthood clinics in San Francisco for one full week.
In January 2006, the "Walk for Life" will yet again march through our streets.

This event can raise the $750 or so we'll need to pay for the Faerie Village portapotties, fence, stage, and sound equipment. I hope lots of faeries will show up in their finest faerie drag and make this beer bust one to remember.

# The VJTB will join the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in their
campaign to get the Trader Joe's chain to sell only eggs produced from hens
not confined to cruel battery cages. HSUS info: http://tinyurl.com/9qseh

# Robert Wlliams Slideshow Nov 6 4-7 pm free

Robert Williams is traveling the West Coast to promote his new book
of paintings, Through Prehensile Eyes. It collects the 58 paintings
he's done since Malicious (from his past three shows at the Tony
Shafrazi Gallery in New York), and is lavishly presented.

Through Prehensile Eyes shows Williams at the top of his game. His
work is always provocative, thoughtful, masterfully composed and
executed.

At the 111 Minna Gallery, Robert Williams will give a slideshow and a
lecture on his art and technique. Don't miss this unique experience
to hear directly from the founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, and the
progenitor of Lowbrow Art.

Increasing numbers of people and organizations are now recognizing
their common cause in building a world that works for all - whether
they call themselves environmentalists or social justice advocates.

Environmentalists in particular are learning some hard lessons about
the importance of addressing the pressing needs of people and
communities, the most disadvantaged of whom suffer most from
industrial pollution and societal neglect. This event will challenge
us to rethink what it means to be an environmentalist, and explore
the potential of different movements meeting at the crossroads for
positive change.

Environmental justice campaigners will speak about four key Bay Area
campaigns and programs and then facilitate small-group discussions on
related topics and themes.

SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS:
Circle of Life, Global Exchange, Earth Island Institute, Bay Area
Wilderness Training, Arc Ecology, Ella Baker Center for Human Rights,
Greenaction Literacy for Environmental Justice, Redefining Progress
