IDA EVENTS

1. IDA Co-sponsors Free "Peaceable Kingdom" Screening in SF

In honor of Vegan Awareness Week, IDA and the San Francisco
Vegetarian Society (SFVS) ( http://www.sfvs.org ) are sponsoring a free
screening of "Peaceable Kingdom," the groundbreaking factory
farming documentary by Tribe of Heart ( http://www.tribeofheart.org ).
The film explores the transformation that is taking place in our
society regarding people's understanding of farmed animals - the
intelligent, loving beings that people more often eat than pet.
It profiles several courageous ex-farmers turned animal
advocates and Gene and Lorri Bauston, pioneers of the farmed
animal sanctuary movement.

This event will also feature a special appearance by Kenneth
Williams, professional bodybuilder and Spokesperson/Coordinator
for IDA's vegan campaign. Even if you've already seen "Peaceable
Kingdom," bring a non-vegetarian friend and hear Kenneth speak
about the positive difference veganism has made in his life.

What: "Peaceable Kingdom" screening featuring special guest
appearance by Kenneth Williams
When: Friday, October 28th at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Red Vic Peace Cafe, 1665 Haight St. (between Stanyan
and Cole), San Francisco (click http://www.redvic.com/location.html for
directions)

This is a FREE event. For more information, please call SFVS at
(415) 273-5481.

2. IDA's World GO VEGAN Days Start Sunday

IDA has introduced World GO VEGAN Days from October 30th through
November 1st to encourage everyone to think about the benefits
of a compassionate diet that is healthy, kind to animals and
ecologically sustainable. With World GO VEGAN Days starting in
less than a week, here are some ideas for ways you can
celebrate, learn more and make a positive difference in the
world.

What You Can Do:

- World GO VEGAN Days gives everyone an opportunity to find out
just how nutritious and delicious vegan food is. Visit IDA's
World GO VEGAN Days website
( http://www.idausa.org/vegandays/comp_cook.html ) for delectable recipes
provided by Compassionate Cooks, or take a meat-eating friend to
a participating restaurant during World GO VEGAN Days for a
discounted meat-free meal. Click
http://www.idausa.org/vegandays/restaurant_specials.html for more
details. Also check out your local supermarket or health food
store for an assortment of tasty and cruelty-free "mock" meats.

- If there aren't any participating restaurants in your area,
ask your local vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants to offer the
World GO VEGAN Days Special. If they sign on, contact
kenneth [at] idausa.org. We'll send participating restaurants a free
World GO VEGAN Days poster, plus they'll get free publicity on
IDA's World GO VEGAN Days website and on the syndicated radio
program "Go Vegan With Bob Linden" ( http://www.goveganradio.com ).

- IDA has posters and postcards to promote World GO VEGAN Days.
If you would like to hang posters in your local health food
store's window or drop a stack of postcards off at your favorite
restaurant or coffee shop, please contact kenneth [at] idausa.org .

- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to
educate people about World GO VEGAN Days and why a vegan diet is
the compassionate choice for human health, the environment, and
animals. You can find the contact information and writer's
guidelines on the Opinion/Editorial page of your local newspaper
or by calling the Editorial Department. Click
http://www.idausa.org/vegandays/outreach.html for a sample letter.

- Read the new Vegan FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and Vegan
Quotes on IDA's World GO VEGAN Days website
( http://www.idausa.org/worldgovegandays.html ).

-Click http://www.idausa.org/worldgovegandays.html for more ways to
take action.

World GO VEGAN Days is a time for vegans to help their family,
friends and co-workers learn more about how a plant-based diet
can improve their health, alleviate animal suffering and
preserve the environment. We hope you will take an active part
in the celebration!

3. Table with IDA at the San Francisco Green Festival and Get
FREE Admission

The 4th Annual San Francisco Green Festival is considered the
Bay Area's premier environmental event and celebration. This
year, more than 60 speakers will give talks on sustainability,
ecology, social change and other topics related to transforming
our lives and our world. Workshops on Green Careers, Socially
Responsible Investing and other interesting subjects are also
offered throughout the weekend. Visitors will also thrill to the
Giant Endangered Species Puppetry Pageant, and enjoy delicious
vegetarian and vegan fare (no meat is being served at the
festival). IDA joins over 350 non-profits, green businesses and
natural products vendors in the exhibitor's hall, and if you
volunteer to table with IDA for four hours you'll get FREE
admission to the festival for the entire weekend.

What: Tabling for IDA at the San Francisco Green Festival
When: IDA needs volunteers for four-hour shifts on Saturday,
November 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, November
6th from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Concourse Exhibition Center, 865 8th St. (between Brannan
and Townsend), San Francisco (click http://tinyurl.com/83xmg for
directions)

To volunteer for IDA's table at the San Francisco Green
Festival, contact Anjee at anjee [at] idausa.org or (415) 388-9641
ext. 219. Click

more about the festival.

4. Gopher Gardening at Ocean Beach

Join the San Francisco Wildlife Protection Project, a joint
effort by IDA and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks
Department, to create a wildlife "sanctuary" along the Great
Highway. By landscaping the area according to the Parks
Department's specifications, volunteers create a habitat for
native gophers and prevent them from being trapped and killed.
This is an ongoing monthly effort, and usually takes place on
the first Saturday of each month.

What: Gopher Gardening at Ocean Beach
When: Saturday, November 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Where: Corner of the Great Highway and Wawona Street, San
Francisco, at the small brick Recreation and Park maintenance
building. Click http://tinyurl.com/4hnh2 for directions to this
event.

For more information, please contact IDA's Bay Area Coordinator
Karen Steele at (415) 388-9641, ext. 217 or karen [at] idausa.org.

5. IDA Demonstrations at UCSF Cancelled

Because IDA is reconfiguring our campaign strategy to have
greater impact, we have decided to cancel the demonstration at
the opening of UCSF's Mission Bay Campus that was originally
scheduled for Friday. We are also ceasing our weekly Wednesday
protests as UCSF's Parnassus Campus until further notice. By
redirecting our efforts into a new approach, we aim to make IDA
an even more effective advocate for the animals suffering in
cruel experiments in UCSF's laboratories. We will keep our
supporters informed of our efforts in this direction.

OTHER BAY AREA EVENTS TO HELP ANIMALS

1. Wildlife Experts Needed to Stop Trophy Hunting of Rare
Antelope

Every year, thousands of endangered wild animals representing
hundreds of different species are killed by trophy hunters on
game ranches all over the U.S. Defenders of Wildlife, along with
other conservation groups, is working to oppose new regulations
proposed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that would allow
certain game ranch owners to profit from the trophy hunting of a
highly endangered, captive-bred antelope native to North Africa.
The group is looking for wildlife experts in the San Francisco
Bay Area to help in the effort to protect this rare species.

If you have had substantial, direct contact with the
scimitar-horned oryx, addax, or dama gazelle or with wildlife
conservation efforts in the desert regions of North Africa and
might be willing to offer your assistance in the conservation of
these species, please contact kgenovese [at] defenders.org . Even if
you're not an experienced naturalist, Defenders of Wildlife is
also looking for individuals who are interested in helping
protect African antelope by contacting decision makers about
specific issues.

Visit http://www.defenders.org to learn more about Defenders of
Wildlife.
