HHS Action Wrap Up

by Alex Franco/ASA
Over 150 patients, families, neighbors and activists gathered yesterday at 50 United
Nations Plaza to ask our regional director to reschedule marijuana.
Dear friends,

Over 150 patients, families, neighbors and activists gathered yesterday at 50 United
Nations Plaza to ask our regional director to reschedule marijuana.

Everyone felt good about our noble task. The sky was overcast and we were surrounded
by the Farmer's market. Where else could you protest injustice and buy fresh
produce at the same time? God, I love San Francisco.

35 patients wore red condition shirts with things like "AIDS", "CANCER" AND
"CONFIDENTIAL" written on them. Patients are so clever!

And the speakers were phenomenal!

Caren Woodsen- ASA campaign coordinator
Frank Lucido, M.D.-Medboard Watch
Jahan Marcu-CPMC researcher
Barbara McKenzie- Steve McWilliam's partner
Michael Alcalay M.D.-Longtime advocate for all things good
Don Duncan- my mentor, ASA board member, BPG and LAPCG
Tony Bowles- Core ASA SF member, President of the California Marijuana Party
Shona G.- Core ASA SF member, Women's Group Coordinator
Lynnet Shaw-longtime activist and MCD operator
Randi- San Francisco hard-core activist and MCD "dutchess"
Bill Britt-Orange County in the house! Long time activist and leader
Jose- Radio personality/ longtime minority rights activist/ Sonoma ASA Core Member
John Dupont-Veteran's Cannabis Action Network
My new Friend- Founded 2nd MCD in California!
Richard Kern-So Cal activist
Michelle Aldrich- long-tme activist
Lovely Nurse R.N. -Retired from Armed forces. Most compelling speach of the hour
Mira-Steve McWilliam's patient, Orange County and SF activist
Starchild- Libretarian Party

(Sorry, I'm a patient and I forget names),

At several points throughout the event

Caren Woodsen and Frank Lucido went up to the Health and Human Services building and
actually met with the Regional Director!

Afterwards, the bus pulled out and left with our beloved So Cal activists headed for
home.

When all was said and done, Sarah Shrader and I went to visit a lovely lady Mary
named in the ICU. This amazing woman collected 300 petitions in a weekend by
heself with limited eyesight and mobility, and she is my current hero. If you have a
moment, please send her a prayer.

Thank you so very much for caring about this issue.

TIME'S UP
CUT THE RED TAPE
RECLASSIFY NOW!

Hello again,

FYI, part of the last message was cut off.

Throughout the event, several of Jane Wyerick's friends led moments of silence in
respect for her passing.

I worked with Jane on this issue that bring so many good people together, and she
was one of the best and brightest. She will be missed greatly as the Elder of our
community.

She was a mentor to us all.

Thanks,

Alex.

P.S. Hats off to Eddy Lepp who also spoke at the HHS event. We're behind you!

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank each and every patient, caregiver, doctor and supporter who joined activists around the country to demand HHS reclassify marijuana.

Lunchtime actions took place in Seattle, Denver, Kansas City, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and, of course, San Francisco.

It is my pleasure to announce that 4 Regional Directors (San Francisco, Seattle, Kansas City and Dallas) met yesterday with activists during the actions. In Washington DC, Steph Sherer delivered more than 20,000 petitions to Secretary Leavitt. Washington is definitely getting the message: Time is Up. The Evidence Is In. Patients are Demanding An Answer Now!

So again, a huge thanks to all the activists who came out and made their voices heard!!

It was an incredible day, and an amazing event. Alex I love my new name, thank you. I feel very fortunate to have been able to speak and give my views as an RN and as a patient.

Too many of us mmj patients stay home, due to our illnesses and disease processes. I believe in my heart I was chosen a long time ago to care for those who can't care for themselves. In that I also believe I should be a voice for those who can not speak for themselves as well. In the beginning I didn't want mj to work. I knew because of who I am and everything I've done in my life staying home and staying quiet wouldn't work for me. So the only option for me is to speak out loud and long.

Many nurses know of patients claims of their incredible results with mmj. It's just a fact learned in a busy hospital. When I first used mmj it was for a headache that I had had for 16 hours and it wouldn't go away with the myriad of prescription drugs I had been given. 3 puffs 15 minutes...poof no headache.
Staying home and being quiet with this knowledge would be a disservice to everything I've ever accomplished in my professional life.

So I've found my voice and a way to still be the nurse I am...So expect more from me... I hope to live up to it.
Have a Blessed Day
