vote
In a nutshell, Request a PAPER BALLOT at the polling place and
NIX the FIRST SIX: No on 73 thru 78, Yes on 79.
(Green Party says No on 80. Many progressive Dems say yes on 80.)
A broad coalition of progressive "get out the voters" have united to prevent
California (and the nation) from forever going Republican due to
redistricting. Why did the Governator call this expensive special election
less than a year prior to the regular election? Because they may have
verifiable paper receipts before that next election so this may be the last
election that will be as easily stolen on hackable voting machines.
Guest Editorial by PhoeBe ANNE (mostly from Berkeley Progressive Alliance
info and Wellstone Renewal)
Crucial Election: Vote November 8 and Get out the Vote!
Special elections usually have low voter turnouts, which tends to favor
conservatives. Gov. Schwarzenegger has called this special election to have
Californians vote on initiatives either initiated or endorsed by him.
Everyone I know is opposing propositions 73 - 78 and supporting 79.
73. Would require Parental Notification for Abortion
74. No Job Security for New Teachers for 5 Years
75. Restricts Union Political Spending (but not that of corporations)
76. Cuts School Funding
77. Reapportionment by Judge's Committee, not Government
(Most California judges were appointed by Republicans.)
78. Drug Companies' Phony Prescription Bill
(Drug companies' participation would be voluntary.)
79. Cheaper Prescription Drugs for Californians Act.
PRO: More enforcement tools than Prop. 78. Pharmaceutical
companies will be penalized if they don't give discounts at the MediCal
reimbursement rate.
80. Repeal of Deregulation and Blackout Prevention.
PRO: New energy crisis and blackouts less likely; more renewable energy.
CON: Fewer choices of electric service providers; more costs for PUC.
...Merci, Philippe for the No on 74, 75, 76 request.
74, 75, and 76 unfairly blame teachers, hurt kids, would silence our voices, and cut even more funding from school.
ACTIVISM: we need you vote on nov 8-no on 74, 75, 76

What Reagan Started, Bush Is Finishing By David Martin
After eight years of the Gipper, four years of Bush I, eight years of Republican
Lite under Clinton, and five years of Shrub, we see the truth of the Reagan
Revolution. The gradual withering away of the welfare and regulatory state has
not unleashed the American entrepreneurial spirit. Rather, it has set loose the
predatory greed of the 19th century robber barons, the class cannibalism of
Social Darwinism, and the winner-take-all rapacity of laissez faire capitalism.

# The Palestinian Nonviolent Resistance Movement:
A Speaking Tour, Oct. 27-Nov. 1 in the Bay Area
Largely unreported by the media, thousands of
Palestinians and hundreds of Israelis are waging a
major grassroots nonviolent campaign of resistance
to the construction of Israel’s Wall. Palestinian
farmers, workers, mothers, and students, together
with Israeli and international volunteers, are braving
teargas, beatings, bullets, arrest, and even death
to block the construction of the Wall with their bodies.
Speakers Ayed Morrar (Palestinian) and Jonathan
Pollak (Israeli) will be in the Bay Area Oct. 27-Nov. 1 to
help correct the lack of coverage about this movement.
For full information and fliers for distribution, go to

# Fri Oct 28 Noon Join IDA Demonstration at Opening Celebration of UCSF's Mission Bay Campus
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) recently paid $92,500 in
fines to avoid hearings on 89 counts of animal welfare violations the USDA
officially lodged against them. At least three primate protocols were
involved in the charges: the invasive brain experiments of Henry Ralston,
Kris Bankiewicz and Michael Merzenich. The USDA allegations included leaving
monkeys unmonitored after surgery, performing a craniotomy on a monkey
without providing post-operative pain relief, and subjecting at least one
monkey to multiple injections of a brain-destroying chemical through the
carotid artery.
Despite the recent public attention UCSF has earned for their serious and
ongoing animal welfare violations, officials still refuse to address or even
acknowledge the problem. They seem far more concerned with celebrating the
building of the multi-million dollar, 43-acre UCSF campus in Mission Bay,
which they will do later this week with much self-congratulatory fanfare.
- Join IDA as we demonstrate against the celebration of the UCSF Mission Bay
campus, where experiments on animals may soon take place, and demand
accountability for researchers' flagrant animal welfare violations.
What: Demonstration at UCSF against animal experimentation
When: Friday, October 28th from Noon to 1.30 p.m.
Where: UCSF's new Mission Bay campus, 1675 Owens St. (between Genentech Hall
and the Mission Bay), San Francisco (click here
http://pub.ucsf.edu/missionbay/directions for directions)
- IDA also holds weekly outreach events at UCSF's Parnassus Campus every
Wednesday from noon to at 1:00 p.m. Please help us maintain an ongoing
presence on campus to show UCSF officials that animal advocates' concerns
cannot be ignored.
Please contact Karen Steele at (415) 388-9641 ext. 217 or karen idausa org
to RSVP. Posters and leaflets will be provided. For more information on
UCSF's animal welfare violations, please visit

Clear Channel Headquarters
340 Townsend St @ 4th / 5th St. sf
Bart to Embarcadero, N-Judah to Caltrain
On October 28, join us as we unmask Clear Channel's agenda. Station KNEW refers to immigrants as "vermin," people of color as "criminals," and promotes physical violence against our communities.
KNEW is Clear Channel's true face unmasked - it's home to almost every well-known hate radio host, including Michael Savage and Bill Bennett.
After being fired from MSNBC for homophobic comments that directed gay people to "Get AIDS and die," host Michael Savage was quickly hired by Clear Channel in the Bay and syndicated nationally.
And last week, on his morning show, Bill Bennett said that, "If you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."
While Savage and Bennett have a right to free speech, no radio station is legally obligated to broadcast their bigoted views. The Bay Area says NO to racist, homophobic radio! JOIN US October 28!

.Why we love propaganda
.Why we believe it affects others, but not us

.How the U.S. public relations industry makes propaganda ubiquitous and acceptable
.How propaganda affects news sources and corrupts democracy.
Historic and current video clips will be shown to illustrate commercial and political propaganda. Recent innovations will be discussed like government-produced, counterfeit "news releases," and a new state department of "public diplomacy" whose purpose is to market America abroad. # Really Really Free Market This Saturday 10/29 (mission district)
San Francisco Dolores Park : Sat October 29 12Noon to 4pm
Come on out for a day of Pre-Halloween fun!! Bring costumes to wear and costumes to share... bring treats and tricks for all. It's another Really Really Free Market event in Dolores Park. We're always looking for people who want to hold classes or discussions on anything from Yoga to Bicycle repair workshops. You've got a skill and a passion to share it with others; this is the place for you! Come on out and see whats happening and who's got what. Maybe you'll go home with that pink polka-dot oven mitt you've been looking for or a new hobby to pull you away from the blue light of a TV at night. Everything is possible and this is our chance to make it all happen.
Have you ever picked up something you found on the sidewalk? Or saved your neighbor from throwing away something useful?
A Really Really Free Market is like a potluck for whatever you want to give or take away. Have you ever brought one dish to a potluck and gone away with a full belly and a balanced meal? Everybody brings something and goes away with more.
We all have skills, ideas, objects, smiles, talents, friendship, excitement, discussions, and many other things to share. If we bring them all together at the Really Really Free Market, we can provide more balanced and full lives for everyone.
As a community we have many more resources than we do as individuals. If we share our resources we won't need to buy as many new ones. This uses fewer of the Earth's resources, and fewer of our working hours, leaving us more time to devote to ourselves and our communities.
Would we all work forty hours a week at one job if we didn't feel we had to? What if instead we worked at improving our individual skills and talents and shared them with each other? We would all spend more time doing things we enjoyed.
The Really Really Free Market is an attempt to put these ideas into practice for four hours every month.
Please help us keep the Really Really Free Market a 100% FREE and non-commercial event. Once a month, let's come together and forget about trading, bartering and money. Leave the business cards at home and remember the joy of giving for the sake of giving.
Help us keep Dolores Park clean. If no one takes what you brought, please bring it home with you.
http://www.reallyreallyfreemarket.org
# Hey friends,
This is just a friendly reminder that the Really REALLY Free
Market will be held in Dolores Park from 12Noon to 4pm this Saturday 10/29
This month's RRFM is right before Halloween, so if you need to complete your costume you might find just the thing at the RRFM!
We could use some folding tables for the market, so if you have any that you want to give or just loan, let Ray( rsykes1710 yahoo com ) know
It would also be great if there are people who want to do any of the following on Saturday:
Perform music or bring a portable sound system!
Teach yoga!
Do bike tuneups!
Juggle!
Bring games to play!
Bring whatever other cool thing that you do!
Don't forget to check the forums and discuss any ideas you have for the
RRFM, at http://www.reallyreallyfreemarket.org
See you Saturday and Happy Halloween!
The Really REALLY Free Market!

What is The Really REALLY Free Market?
It's like a large community-wide garage sale, except everything is
FREE! Yes, that's right, FREE! Everyone is invitied to bring things to
GIVE
AWAY!
So this is like bartering or trading, right?
Nope. Bartering and trading go something like this: I've got this great
shirt here, what can you offer me for it?
The RRFM goes something like this: I've got this really great shirt
here. I don't really wear it anymore, but I'd hate to see it go to
waste.
Do you want it? Great! Here, it's yours!
Why would i want to do a thing like that?
Because you have to many things already! Because you're just going to
throw it away anyway. Because it FEELS GOOD! Do you have things
cluttering up your home? Maybe some stuff that you don't use anymore,
but you
know that someone else would probably love. One person's trash can
truly be another person's treasure!
What should I bring?
Bring *your thing* to the RRFM, whatever that is! Material goods, food
or drinks, a service to provide, a skill you have that you want to
teach to others, a performance, or anything else!
What if I don't have anything to give away?
Everyone has something to give to others. The RRFM isn't just about
giving away *stuff.* What is it that you do? Why not come to the RRFM
and
find a way to do it for others, except this time for free just for the
fun of it. As a gift to others, as a gift to yourself. It's a way of
reclaiming meaning in your job, to give it as a gift, unmediated by
commerce.
Who runs the RRFM?
Well, the RRFM consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you
bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as
what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you. That
said, there are some folks who came together to help create the
structure for the RRFM to work. But it is our hope that soon enough,
our role
within the RRFM will be the same as everyone else's. That is, that each
of us decides our own level of involvement.
The RRFM is yours!
Take advantageous of that. Make it what you want it to be! If you want
to see something happening at the RRFM that isn't already happening,
than make it happen! If you want to see more people coming to the RRFM,
help spread the word! Send emails to your friends, make and distribute
flyers (make your own or download them from the website), talk to
people
about the RRFM.
----
Please help us keep the RRFM a 100% FREE and non-commercial event. Once
a month, let's come together and forget about trading, bartering, and
money. Leave the business cards at home and remember the joy of giving
for the sake of giving. Help us keep Dolores Park clean. If no one
takes
what you brought, please bring it home with you. If you like what you
just read, get involved! Come to the RRFM! Bring your own gifts to
share! Spread the info, and get more people involved! The RRFM takes
YOU to
make it happen.

What is the Spiral Dance?
The holiday popularly known as Halloween is the time of year known to witches as Samhain, when the veil is thin between the worlds of the living and the dead. We gather to remember and honor our ancestors, our Beloved Dead, and all those who have crossed over. As we mourn for those we love who have died this year, we also mourn the losses and pain suffered by the Earth, our Mother. Yet even as we grieve we also remember and honor the sacred cycle of life, death, rebirth and regeneration, celebrating the births of our children born this year, and our own vital connections to the Earth and each other, in which we ground our hope. more...

# 10/29: Dissident Israeli academic/activist Ilan Pappe (oakland downtown)
The Modern Middle East
Ilan Pappe brings us the first introductory textbook on the modern Middle East to foreground the urban, rural, cultural and women's histories of the region over its political and economic history.
Dr. Ilan Pappe is a senior lecturer of Political Science at Haifa University. He is one of Israel's "new historians," so called because their writings, based on access to material recently released by the British and Israeli archives, has started to undermine myths about the foundation and early years of the Israeli state.
Pappe has been threatened with dismissal by the university because of his support for a Jewish graduate student whose dissertation had brought to public attention to a massacre in an Arab village by Israeli forces in 1948. More recently, Pappe has been attacked for his support of a boycott of Israeli academic institutions.
Introduced by Stanford Professor Khalil Barhoum

Chet Helms was one of the founding fathers of the psychedelic movement from the 1960's. As promoter for the "Family Dog", Chet developed the concept of the modern rock concert and was one of the founding fathers of the 1960's peace movement that swept the nation and made waves around the world. Chet was also the catalyst that brought together Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, which helped shape the San Francisco sound. Without Chet Helms, as many have said, there would be no Grateful Dead, no Jefferson Airplane, no Big Brother and the list goes on and on. He promoted other acts like the Charlatans, the Great Society, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Peter Tosh, The Clash and countless others. Chet Helms continued promoting pivotal concerts through four decades. In the 60's at the Avalon Ballroom, Family Dog at the Beach, S.F. Golden Gate Park, Denver Dog, and Crystal Ballroom in Portland.

Welcome to Halloween in the Castro, one of San Francisco's most unique neighborhood celebrations.
This is the 3rd year that the City has come together with Castro community organizations, businesses and neighbors to create a safe, fun, entertaining evening.
Be creative. Halloween allows us to transform ourselves for this night of merriment. So dress up.
Our biggest change is that Halloween in the Castro does not allow drinking of alcohol on the streets.
When you arrive, our wonderful San Francisco Sheriffs will welcome you at the gates. Please give at least $5 to support the event. Sheriffs will confiscate alcohol and ensure that no one comes in with dangerous costumes or props (in 2002 someone brought in a working chain saw!) so leave those swords, hockey sticks, and power tools at home.
There will be three stages of entertainment and music, featuring live performers, DJs, costume contests and more. I want to thank my Energy 92.7 friends DJ Fernando and Greg the Gay Sportscaster for emceeing this yearís main stage with Heklina of Trannyshack.
Expanded Muni, BART and Taxi service, makes it easy to get to the Castro without driving – there will not be parking.
Our goal is a fun, neighborhood Halloween celebration. All are welcome, but remember the Castro is the heart of our City's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender community. Individuals who are intoxicated or violent will quickly meet San Francisco Police Officers and spend the rest of the evening in County Jail 9.
So Play Nice and A Have Fun, Happy Halloween!

won't be your ordinary boring user group (UGh!)
Learn the secret handshake!
There will be free punch and pie, good music and decent lighting,

Thinking Critically About Propaganda
Instructor: Marlys Mayfield, author of Thinking for Yourself.
Lecture and Discussion Topics include:
.Why we love propaganda
.Why we believe it affects others, but not us
.How we have come to accept ever-widening U.S. government use of 6propaganda
.How the U.S. public relations industry makes propaganda ubiquitous and acceptable
.How propaganda affects news sources and corrupts democracy.
Historic and current video clips will be shown to illustrate commercial and political propaganda. Recent innovations will be discussed like government-produced, counterfeit "news releases," and a new state department of "public diplomacy" whose purpose is to market America abroad. A bibliography will be provided.

The Last Saturday of EVERY Month!
Dolores Park 12-4pm
http://www.reallyreallyfreemarket.org
email: reallyfreemarket mutualaid org

Plone? Is that some new energy drink?
Nope! Plone is a revolutionary, cross-platform deployable, Open
Source Content Management System with something for everyone. Plone
leverages the Zope Database Application Server and the power of the
Python programming language. This, together with Unit Testing,
established Best Practices, shrubberies, Internationalization,
Accessibility, Standards Compliance, and a vibrant community of the
hippest developers in the world, make Plone rise to the top of the
stack. Haven't heard of Plone yet? Well, where have you been?! Learn
more at http://plone.org
Everyone is invited!
At the first meeting, we'll be discussing the goals of PloneLounge --
should we have noble orators to expatiate at our meetings? Throw
radical Plone-powered social events? Geek out on Plone projects? Come
and help decide! PloneLounge is driven by YOU, and we guarantee: this
won't be your ordinary boring user group (UGh!)
Learn the secret handshake!
There will be free punch and pie, good music and decent lighting,
plus a chance to meet like-minded and fashionably dressed folks
interested in Plone and related Open Source software. Bring a date!
Afterwards, maybe we'll head over to SubLounge for some cocktails!
