2.  Downed Animal Protection Act introduced

Under pressure from the meat industry, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns may lift the temporary ban against downed cattle instituted in 2003.  To prevent the lifting of these necessary restrictions, Senator Daniel Akaka and U.S. Representatives Gary Ackerman and Steven LaTourette have introduced an new version of the Downed Animal Protection Act (H.R. 3931/ S. 1779) which would keep all downed animals out of the food supply.  The bill would help end the horrific practices associated with the sale of downed animals, including forcibly dragging sick, injured or crippled animals onto the kill floor with complete disregard for the additional pain they are caused.

To help ensure this important legislation is passed, please write your Senators and Representative and ask that they co-sponsor the Downed Animal Protection Act. If your legislators are co-sponsors, please send them a letter of thanks.  Current sponsors are listed at: www.nodowners.org/intro_dapa_sponsors.htm

3.  New vegan market in Boulder, CO

We are pleased to report the opening of Three Little Figs Market, an all-vegan specialty foods store located in Boulder, Colorado. The beautiful pastries, fine confections, vegetarian specialties and wide selection of gourmet items on offer at Three Little Figs will dispel any misconceptions about vegan food as puritanical!  Non-vegetarians will finally be exposed to the many varied and delicious vegan options available, while even those committed to eating animal-free will find their culinary horizons expanded. For more information, visit our website at www.threelittlefigs.com.
