Don't Just Vote

True Democracy Lies Beyond the Ballot!

On November 8th, Governor Schwarzenegger has called a special election which many view as wasteful and unnecessary. However, there are several important issues being addressed and they should be looked at carefully. Prop. 73 would make it mandatory for a parent to be notified if there under-18 year old daughter is going to have an abortion. Prop. 79 would reduce prescription drug costs by 50%. Prop. 78 would only allow drug companies to lower prices. Prop. 75 would require many unions to show detailed records of their political contributions. Locally, Measure M would put a ten-year moratorium on genetically-engineered foods while more research is done to test the health and environmental risks of modified crops. Every responsible citizen has an obligation to participate in this process and exercise their fundamental right, a right that has been paid for with the blood of thousands. Each one of us who is voting owes it to those who struggled for this right to let our voices be heard on the crucial issues that face our generation.

Nevertheless, we must recognize that the American electoral system, in its current form, is a profound lie, an illusion of democracy that is meant to alienate and pacify the people into believing that they live in a free society. The electoral process is merely one part of a vastly corrupt system whose main objective is to keep the public mind focused on trivialities and the selfish pursuit of wealth so that the privileged few can maintain their dominance over our government, our economy, and our culture. Do not be fooled by these elections, for they are a measure of money and propaganda, not a measure of the interests of the people. We not vote on matters of our specific interests. We did not vote for war. We did not vote for tax cuts to the rich. We did not vote for the PATRIOT Act. We did not vote for racism or sexism or homophobia. We did not vote for the privatization of health care, or the de-funding of our schools, nor did we vote for this savage project of capitalism which serves the interests of a wealthy minority while enslaving the world’s majority. Do not be fooled by their vicious lies; this system has no intention of letting you or I control our own fates.

On November 8th, Don’t Just Vote! If we want to make real democratic changes, we must go beyond the ballot. We must be willing to work long and hard against the forces that restrict the power of the people. Democracy is not given, it is fought for with tireless struggle. Now is the time for ACTION! Educate yourself and others, organize your friends and your workplaces, join an organization that is fighting for justice and equality, or start your own. Do not wait for an election year to combat the evils of our time. Take to the streets! Organize strikes and boycotts! Spread the word of resistance! Go beyond the ballot! The future is unwritten. It is up to us, the people of goodwill, to write our history in the name of democracy and human rights!
