SOCIAL STRIKE UPDATE:

When MUNI told us it was going to raise our fares 20%, cut our service 7%,
and get rid of 10% of their workforce, we said HELL NO! On September 1, when
they raised our fares, we began a direct action, and thousands of us have
been on a social strike since, which means we keep riding and driving MUNI,
but we refuse to pay or collect fares until our demands are met – until MUNI
returns to the previous staffing and service levels, and the fare is set back
to $1.25.

As MUNI’s puts its service cuts into effect TODAY, September 24, it is
feeling the hurt. Despite raising fares 20%, it’s take at the farebox has
remained flat to down for the first half of September. The strike is having
an effect, and more and more people are noticing too! On Thursday we held a
united press conference against these service cuts. Among the speakers at
our press conference were representatives from the Coalition for Transit
Justic, Muni Fare Strike, Social Strike, POWER, POOR
Magazine/PoorNewsNetwork, St. Peter's Housing Committee, Gray Panthers,
Mission Agenda, HOMEY, Women's Collective, La Raza Centro Legal, Chinese
Progressive Association, Mujeres Unidas, SF Day Labor Program. Get involved
and let’s keep raising the pressure on MUNI!
