Beyond Chron: Two Days, Four Events Worth Your Time
Despite City Hall being quiet this week, there’s a variety of political events occurring across town over the next two days worth making time for. Tomorrow, the Reverend Jesse Jackson will be joining the United Health Care Workers here in San Francisco to battle Sutter Health Care, and will give a speech to supporters. Later that night, the Noe Valley Democratic Club will hold what promises to be an interesting panel discussion about leftist politics here in the city, with Matt Gonzalez, Debra Walker, and others speaking. On Thursday, the Tenant’s Union will be holding a protest against the lawyer in San Francisco most responsible for Ellis Act evictions – Andrew Zacks. Later on, the Arts Task Force will host Chris Daly and District 6 community members to discuss how San Francisco can better support the arts in the Tenderloin and South of Market. For dates, times, locations, and more info, read on.
*On Wednesday, October 5th, Rev. Jesse Jackson will be joining UHW’s picket lines and speaking before their community of caregivers and vast supporters as no one else can! You can join them at 5pm Wednesday, at CPMC's Pacific Campus (2333 Buchanan Street, San Francisco). Sutter Health, which runs the hospital being picketed, refuses to agree to a federal mediator’s compromise proposal that UHW has agreed to, but Sutter refuses to.
*The Noe Valley Democratic Club is hosting a panel discussion on the San Francisco Democratic Party and the Local Left at their general membership meeting on Wednesday, October 5 at 7 pm at the Noe Valley Ministry, 1021 Sanchez Street (between 23rd and 24th). Panelists will be SF State Professor Richard DeLeon, former Board of Supervisors President Matt Gonzalez, Tim Redmond of the Bay Guardian, and progressive activist Debra Walker.
*Picket landlord & landlord attorney Andrew Zacks next Thursday, October 6,
4:30 PM at his office at 235 Montgomery St. As an attorney, Andrew Zacks is behind nearly every Ellis Act eviction in San Francisco. He's responsible for evicting thousands of tenants and he's personally put hundreds of senior and disabled tenants on the street. Not satisfied just being the attorney behind the evictions, Zacks is now buying up buildings himself-just so he can evict the tenants under the Ellis Act. He just bought an 8 unit building at 1856 Franklin and promptly evicted all the tenants there. Three are seniors, with over 20 years tenancy each.
*District 6 Arts Task Force Community Meeting, October 6th at the SOMARTS Gallery, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. 934 Brannan Street (between 8th and 9th Streets). Handicap accessible. Artists: What does the City need to do to keep you working and living in SF? Arts Organizations: In what ways can the City help sustain and stabilize your organizations? Community Members: Can funding be better directed to assure the arts meet the broader needs of your community? Meet with Supervisor Chris Daly, Arts Task Force Members and District 6 Community Members.
