The police chief has solicited and recieved some rather inhibiting restrictions on public gatherings via some new city codes. They were enforced to the utmost degree during WTO events here, and they will follow through again. Many of the tactics counterprotesters have used in places like Garden Grove, Alhambra, or other locations, that included personal assaults, spitting, lasers, and ear peircing sound devices held to the face will likely see any of those employing them getting a forced bed and breakfast at a minus 3 star hotel. They actually tried this 26 years ago in Nicaragua, where the Somoza Dynasty (US puppet fascists) got overthrown by the Sandinistas (a popular revolutionary front). Once this happened it looked like all of Central America would follow suit, starting with El Salvador.

That was when your lovely 'land of the free' launched an international TERROR war against Nicaragua, simultaneously pouring weapons, training, expert advice, covert support, and mountains of money into incredibly vicious suppression campaigns inside El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. Guatemala and El Salvador were about equally horrible. I promise you, if you could bear witness to what happened there at US insistence, you would never see this country in the same light again. This was done to PROP UP those corrupt governments which, you see, are corrupt as hell because we WANT. THEM. TO. BE.

1) You invade the countries and occupy them (as we did here 1900 to 1930)

2) you reorganize their governments and economies for "foreign investment" so that GNP flows out of them into your own economy. No matter how much wealth it's actually generating, the native economy is thus kept in a permanently impoverished state. Think of a dog with a ten-pound tapeworm. It stays malnourished no matter how much it eats.

3) you install ruthlessly corrupt puppet heads of state who make sure everything stays this way just so long as they get their cut (which usually runs into $billions$)

4) And you give these colonial master technicians unlimited military aid, making their armies so strong the people can not hope to topple them. The only way they get taken down is when their own armies turn on them, which is known to happen

This way you get to have your de facto colonies AND keep shooting your smug 'land of the free' mouth off all at the same time. Verree clever. This has been going on for decades.

Because of the nightmare that unfolded in Central America during the '80s, hundreds of thousands fled and trekked the entire length of Mexico in order to sneak into the US, the only country in the hemisphere where they could hope to live a decent life. It's not just poverty that drove them. Some of them had to BECAUSE they were revolutionaries. If they'd stuck around back home they would have ended up in unmarked graves.

Then Mexico got neo-colonized. That's what NAFTA really was; Ross Perot had it dead backwards, the sucking sound went North. Perot was right about US manufacturing jobs, of course, but the billionaires don't give a shit about that.

NAFTA put Mexican family farmers on a level playing field with US agribusiness giants, with whom they couldn't possibly compete. Mexico's entire centuries-old agrarian culture was gutted. The peasant farmers now had three choices: 1) stick around and watch your kids die of poverty; 2) head for the maquiladores (foreign-owned factories); 3) sneak into the US (pays best by far)

All that said, I actually agree with you: the solution is not for these people to come over here, where they're undoing everything the US labor movement is trying to achieve (the Bushies love this). The best solution is for the US-dominated global neocolonial/neoliberal order to be dismantled so they're not driven to this in the first place.

Where you're wrong is in identifying which country the revolution needs to happen in. That would be the US. In the grand global scheme of corruption, this country is the unrivalled top dog. That's what makes it an empire. Let the people of any subordinate country try to shake off their chains, and King Kong will ruthlessly smash them back into line. Nicaragua for example. Formerly the wealthiest country in Latin America, it's now the second-poorest in the hemisphere. A severe example has been made of it: "Thees eez wot happenz wen joo fock weeth El Norte. Joo gott eet?" It's all straight out of a bad '30s mobster movie.

For their part, Americans will never revolt because they're all fat and spoiled from living on the milk-and-honey end of the neocolonial flow of capital. This is what they think "freedom" means. Imperialist US billionaires understand the need to keep you oblivious to it all by tossing you plenty of scraps and keeping you in a deep hypnotic state. It's all very brilliantly worked out.

We know the hand of manipulation. That is why we are resisting it's influence here in America. Letting America fall prey to neocolonialism will not help in the slightest. Thwarting thier plan by halting the flow of thier colonists to America will at least toss a roadblock thier direction, or possibly establish a battle line.
