$10,000 REWARD OFFERED IN SHOOTING OF
DOGS IN ST. BERNARD PARISH

Fourteen dogs, left by their owners in hopes of returning to them, were slaughtered, shot in the body cavity, forcing the dogs to suffer a prolonged death. All were found dead at Beauregard Middle School in St. Bernard Parish, New Orleans.

$10,000 REWARD OFFERED BY WASHINGTON STATE ANIMAL RESCUE GROUP
Pasado's Safe Haven, a Washington State animal rescue organization that has rescued over 700 animals from New Orleans homes, has issued a $10,000 reward seeking the conviction of the individual(s) responsible for shooting the dogs to death at Beauregard Middle School. Pasado's Safe Haven has issued numerous rewards in the past seeking conviction of perpetrators of heinous animal cruelty cases, which great results:

PASADOREWARDS WORK
• A $3000 reward was posted by Pasado's Safe Haven in a case where a dog was intentionally dragged behind a van by a woman who eventually fled from police. The reward produced a tip that led sheriff's officers to find the woman. The woman was jailed and convicted for First Degree Animal Cruelty.
• A $3000 reward was issued by Pasado's Safe Haven in a case where cows and a calf had been shot in the middle of the night on a cattle ranch. The reward, publicized in the media, led to a tip that led investigators to three teen boys who had purchased firearms off the streets and who admitted to "using the cows as target practice". Three cows died and the calf eventually had to be euthanized. All boys were jailed on First Degree Animal Cruelty charges
• A $5000 reward posted by Pasado's Safe Haven led to the conviction of a man who took a litter of unwanted puppies out to a rural area and shot them in the body cavity, resulting in suffering of the animals. Only one puppy survived with intensive veterinary medical treatment.

HOW PASADOREWARDS WORK
Pasado's Safe Haven offers all animal cruelty-related rewards through the media. According to Humane Investigator for Pasado's Safe Haven, Mark Steinway, "People who commit these kinds of crimes will sell out their mother for a buck. Money makes people talk. They've been a very successful tool for us in tracking down perpetrators of horrifying cases of animal cruelty."
• News of the reward is offered to the media
• Individuals who have witnessed the crime call Pasado's Safe Haven anonymously.
• All tips are turned over by Pasado's Safe Haven to local authorities.
• If the tip leads to a conviction of the accused, Pasado's Safe Haven issues the reward, in full, to the tipster

WHY DO WE OFFER PASADOREWARDS?
People who hurt animals are likely to hurt humans as well. Animal cruelty portends human violence. "People who intentionally make an animal suffer need to suffer the consequences," says mark Steinway. "Hopefully this reward will bring about a conviction that'll make the person who did this think twice before they hurt an animal again."

WHO WAS PASADO?
Pasado's Safe Haven is one of the country's premiere animal sanctuaries, located in the Pacific Northwest. 150 PasadoRescuers have been in New Orleans rescuing animals since Hurricane Katrina hit. The rescue group is named for Pasado the donkey, a beloved 21-year-old donkey who was beaten for hours and hung. The death of Pasado led to upgrading animal cruelty laws from the lowest misdemeanor to a felony.

WHY A $10,000 REWARD IN THE NEW ORLEANS CASE?
The middle school was a temporary shelter for evacuees who, after flood waters rose, were ordered not to take their pets with them. Many of the pet owners scrawled their names and phone numbers on the wall of the middle school room, in an effort to have their pets reunited with them. All of the fourteen dogs were found shot, lying in pools of blood. These evacuees lost everything. To find out that the pets they tried to save were killed in this manner is the final blow.

According to Pasado's Safe Haven Humane Investigator, on the ground in St. Bernard Parish, "The dogs who were shot in St. Bernard Parish did not die immediately. They were not shot in the head to quickly bring about death. Shooting an animal in the body cavity is one of the most cruel ways to kill an animal."

According to St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jack Stephens, the shell-casings are consistent with those used by law enforcement. Before this incident occurred, a St. Bernard Sheriff's Officer was documented shooting dogs in the street by a Dallas news videographer. According to Sheriff Stephens, "We'll get to the bottom of this. If it's one of our officers, we'll let the cards fall where they may. He reportedly has turned this case over to the Louisiana State's Attorney for investigation.

VETERINARY EXAMINATION
Pasado's Safe Haven knows that it takes more than what you think to make a case of animal cruelty. If this person is identified, they may claim "the animals were suffering" "I had to put them out of their misery". To assure that a conviction can happen, PasadoRescuers will take the dogs to a veterinarian, Licensed in the State of Louisiana, for necropsies (animal autopsies). Necropsies can prove whether an animal had been in a state of dehydration or starvation at the time of death. The animals will also be kept, in a freezer, so no evidence will be discarded.

PRESS CONTACT: Mark Steinway, Pasado's Safe Haven/PasadoRescuers are "staged" at a triage location in Raceland, LA, 45 minutes south of New Orleans on a 150-acre farm. There, over 700 animals have been treated for dehydration and emaciation. As of yesterday, PasadoRescuers are still finding "miracle animals" still alive in New Orleans' homes who haven't had food for water for a month.

Would it have been less brutal to let the dogs starve and fight to death on the street?

also, from bestfriends.org comments:

This has to be the worst story ever, and will probably get worse. Another school has been found with the same scene inside, it just keeps getting worse. Beauregard Middle School was used as a staging area, where people were brought and allowed to bring their pets. After three days, they were evacuated, but then were told they could NOT bring their animals. They were told that the animals would be taken care of by the police, and were left with plenty of food and water. The saddest thing of all are the notes that the owners left on the walls and doors of the schoolrooms where they trustingly but reluctantly left their beloved babies. All the dogs were identified, and most seemed to have had tags. There was a mother dog with 6 puppies, a large dog that had a note begging that it not be shot. From the condition of the bodies, the dogs were all shot, some many times, shortly after the people were evacuated. Some of the dogs were tied, some tried to run, to no avail. There were piles of shells in the rooms, marked "Tactical" for all that means. Whoever did this is the epitome of evil. If they would do this to an innocent dog, they would do it to a human being, with the same chilling coldness. If this was done by policemen, they must immediatly be removed from their jobs and prosecuted. Here is the heartwrenching letter just left on ericsdogblog.: by savethepets3, 9/30/05 1:23 ET I just answered the phone to hear a sobing woman on the other end of the line .. Carol, John, their son and daughter inlaw were all together when they watched CNN. She could barely speak to me after watching CNN .. carols 14 year old husky/Shep named bullet was most likely one of the four dogs in this family that was shot to death. She adopted this dog from the pound as a puppy and raised it and loved it for 14 years. Bullet was hit by a car when he was a puppy and she just got done paying off the $4000.00 bill from the vet .. then she got tests and medicine for the dogs arthritis ... this family has been trying to get thier dogs back since the day after the storm. They were promised my the police that their animals would be taken care of .. well with the help of people like you and i, we had fostercare already setup for the dogs. This is only one story of one of the dogs in the family .. all 4, were almost certain shot to death in PGT Middle school .. John was in the bedroom and is so distraught that he couldn't talk to me .. his dog was "Angel Girl" the black lab that slept in his bed with him every night and the dog that woke them up and saved their lives when the water started rising .. one of the dogs that was shot to death in cold blood.

"Would it have been less brutal to let the dogs starve and fight to death on the street?"

let's see, it looks to me like the owners were assured by the police that their dogs would be taken care of, and reluctantly left them, with plenty of food and water.
WHY NOT JUST EVACUATE THEM WITH THE DOGS???
also, if the cops were concerned about the dogs suffering, why shoot them in such a brutal way. fucking (i hate to compare them to an animal, but lacking a better term right now) pigs.

another example of never trust the police, sadly. unfortunately, many people were forced to leave their animals, at gunpoint. here's a post from bestfriends.org:

"John, the owner of "Angel Girl" woke up because she was pawing at him .. and pawing at him and woke him up because the flood waters were rising .. the waters rose quickly but they did manage to get all 4 of there dogs up in the attic with them .. it actually rose all they way up into the rafters and Angel girl fell through the wet ceiling and they had to pull her back up onto a mattress they manage to get up there .. they had to kick out the side vent in the attic. These people were told where they could go WITH their dogs and did manage to get 4 of them and all 4 of their dogs safely to the Middle School where they were told they would be rescued WITH THEIR DOGS, all 4. They were forced to ecavuate at gun point and told they could not take their dogs .. including two service dogs (that i know of, might be more) one lady was hand cuffed because she wasen't going to leave without her hearing aid dog. THIS IS SO UNREAL!! "

anyway, get ready to defend Fluffy if this shit happens in the bay area in an earthquake. (and get your earthquake supplies ready, including for your pets). it's not like we'll have time to evacuate beforehand.

Are you kidding me. Are you telling me that the low life that went into that building and blew away helpless pets had no other alternative !
A kind person's first instinct would be one of compassion, not evil...
This person was so out to kill. This person got his rocks off doing this.
Outsiders have to get this scumbag, because you can bet they will front for each other down there. Animals are not important, they proved that didn't they !
Those pet owners better raise hell and not let these sweet souls be forgotten.
There are so many rescue groups down there.Your telling me that person couldn't have alerted them.
Are you living under a rock with your mindset..
Animals don't deserve to be rescued and given food ?
"A Nation's Greatness" and it's "Moral Progress" can be judged by the way it's animals are treated...(mg)
and we as a nation have failed and continue to fail them miserably.
Frankly I'm , more afraid of the person with two hands than an animal with four paws...and so should you !

gory, and very sad.

These pets weren't left on the street to starve to death. They were left in school buildings with some food.

At the very least, give them a chance for survival. Besides, these animals weren't put down because they were starving. They were shot shortly after their owners evacuated. Also, a witness heard law enforcement officers laughing about how it was target practice for them. That is just disgusting - that county should be ashamed of itself. Also know this - it isn't the first time St Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office has been accused of animal cruelty. There was also a video of Sgt Mike Minton running over and shooting two innocent friendly dogs - all caught on tape. These dogs were wagging their tails.

I have lived in St.bernard all my years and some of the cops there or no less of criminals that those sitting in jail, but they tend to get away with things because they think they can. Personally I think the badge's make them feel empowered. I pray for justice for those helpless dogs and there owners, but I must say that if you leave this situation in sheriff J. Stephens hands don't expect any justification.
by JANE DOE
Susie are you mentally ill. Those dogs had wagging tales when those officers shot them, and it was a criminal act. Also there owers left more than enough food for there pets in the schools. As a matter of fact there were bowls of food and water next to the dead dogs who lye in puddles of blood. So please speak of nothing if you don't know the situation. THEY WERE FINE UNTIL SHOT!!!
