"Fatal Flood" Film, Discussion & Fundraiser for Katrina Relief

by Dan Bacher (danielbacher [at] hotmail.com)
As another hurricane spurrred by global warming is set to devastate the Gulf Coast, I urge everybody to attend this film showing and fundraiser tomorrow at Sacramento State University to help the Victims of Katrina. The event is sponsored by the Campus PDA, NAACP Political Action Committee and the Freedom Bound Center.
Announcement For Fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina Relief:

Dear Friends,

Please join PDA, the NAACP Political Action Committee, and the Freedom Bound Center this Friday night, September 23 for a very special Friday Night Film Series event at Sacramento State University. We will be presenting Fatal Flood: A Story of Greed, Power, and Race, a powerful film about the infamous flood of 1927 that devastated the Southern Gulf Coast region, much like Hurricane Katrina has done. '

Also like Katrina, the tragedy that befell the Gulf Coast in 1927 was not merely a "natural" disaster. The fatal flood of 1927 was an earlier example of how Mother Nature's fury, in combination with racism, class oppression, and misguided public policy can wreak havoc on our nation. Sound eerily familiar? We ignore these historical lessons at our peril. The film will be followed by video footage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath and a frank discussion about what went wrong and how progressives can respond to this tragedy.

This special kick-off event of PDA's popular Friday Night Film Series will be a fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina survivors. Donations will be collected at the door ($5-$10 sliding scale suggested), but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds will be delivered to Community Labor United (CLU), a New Orleans coalition of labor and community activists which has put out a call to activists and organizations across the country to support a “people’s campaign” of community redevelopment in New Orleans. Checks can be made out to the Vanguard Public Foundation, 383 Rhode Island St., Ste 301, San Francisco, CA 94103.

As always, free popcorn, soft drinks, and treats will be provided. We look forward to seeing you all Friday night.

Keep the Faith,
Paul B
