We speak with Ricardo Alarcon about the case of the Cuban 5 – five Cuban nationals arrested in 1998 and accused of being spies and a threat to US national security.
A story that has been major news in Cuba, but has gotten little attention in this country is the case of the Cuban 5--five Cuban nationals arrested in 1998 and accused of being spies and a threat to the national security of the United States. Last month, a federal appeals court overturned their convictions and ordered a new trial for the men.

Since the word terrorist gets thrown around a great deal by the US corporate media, i can also use the term terrorist when it applies to the Bush regime. The US government under the Bush regime is harboring mass murderer Luis Posada Carriles who exploded a Cuban tourist airliner with no survivors and also blew up a hotel in Havana..
"On October 6, 1976, a Cuban airplane took off carrying 73 persons. The plane was blown up shortly after departure, leaving no survivors.
The attack was the work of a terrorist bomb planted on board the civilian jet. Months later, the Venezuelan police arrested the suspected terrorists and put them behind bars to await trial for the massacre.
Islamic extremism had nothing to do with this attack. But the same kind of blind hatred and fanatic disregard for human life in service of a cause motivated the killers. Luis Posada Carriles, the virulently anti-Castro explosives expert considered the mastermind of the bombing, escaped from the Venezuelan prison in 1985. Not only was he unrepentant, but judging from his subsequent actions, he was determined to kill again.
Fifteen years later Posada was again accused of terrorism in a thwarted attempt to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro at a summit meeting in Panama. He was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison and later pardoned by outgoing president Mireya Moscoso.
Posada had previously admitted to involvement in a string of 1997 hotel bombings in Havana. The bombings resulted in the death of an Italian tourist. Several months ago Posada fled to Florida where his lawyer filed an asylum petition on his behalf. News of Posada's presence in the United States generated public outrage and U.S. immigration services finally arrested the Cuban on charges of violation of immigration law."

While the Cuban 5 have not killed anyone, Posada committed mass murder of innocent civilians and is being harbored by the Bush regime, most likely financially influenced by Miami's anti-Castro influences..
Bush needs to face up to the crimes of right wing thugs like Posada and allow the extridition to Venezuala. The Cuban 5 are being held illegally as they have committed no crime. This is beyond double standard as the US regime is harboring a known mass murderer and simultaneuosly illegally detaining Cuban citizens who have committed no crimes of violence or otherwise. The charges of espionage against the Cuban Five are unfounded and a result of their investigations of the numerous death threats and attempts against Fidel originating from the right wing sectors of Miami..
There are numerous accusations against the Cuban government of human rights violations and detention of Cuban citizens calling themselves anarchists. The reality is there is a network of wealthy anti-Castro Cubans who infiltrate the country with the intent to disrupt the Cuban socialist government by various methods. Some may even call themselves anarchists, yet why these anarchists aren't working in the US to collapse a very real facist state is beyond me. Though some of the Cuban government's laws may seem a bit anal, their version of tyranny is quite mild compared to the extreme class and racial polarization, imprisonment, police brutality, ecocide, etc. found within the US and worldwide as a result of US policies..
A challenge to the Cuban government is to release any true anarchists in Cuban prisons with the condition upon release that they put their energy to the collapse of US imperialism and do not attempt to "overthrow" the Cuban government. A true anarchist will be called upon by their @ beliefs to challenge facism in it's most extreme and murderous form first, then focusing on petty disputes with the more regimented communist/socialists after facism is out of the picture. While socialism/communism and facism may be equally distasteful to many anarchists, surely we can realize the greater physical and ecological threat of facism and US imperialism minimizes the threats of petty Cuban restrictions on freedom. If anything the latest in Cuban urban organic gardening (post petroleum permacultura) is more similar to large scale effective anarchism than what exists anywhere else. There are plenty of right wing hitmen like Posada who are already participating in the violent attacks on Castro with the financial and military support of the Bush regime and the right wing Miami cartel..
Libertarians realize that the Bush regime isn't operating on a free market, subsidizing corporations with billions of taxpayer dollars only amounts to corporate socialism. Supporting the impoverished by building low income housing in condensed neighborhoods would alleviate suburban sprawl's smog, petroleum consumption and other unwanted side effects of subsidizing developers to build McMansions far away from the urban centers. Anarchy seeks to find a middle path between the extremes of totalitarian communism and corporate dominance under capitalism. The merger of the state and corporate interests equal facism, that is what the US citizenry is living under today. Self governance returns the decision making to the community, away from a centralized heirarchical authority that only seeks to improve their wealth and power at the expense of people and the ecosystem. We may need international intervention combined with a strong resistance movement in the US to rid ourselves of facist elements entrenched in Washington DC. The GW Bush regime needs to be put on trial as a war criminal before an international tribunal for the illegal invasion of Iraq and the criminal negligence in New Orleans disaster. Harboring mass murderer Luis Posada Carriles is an additional charge added to the growing list of war crimes and human rights violations by the Bush regime. US anarchists can express their temporary solidarity with international socialist organizations to prevent and eliminate the Bush regime's facist stranglehold on the US..
