Maxxam Lawyer Gets a Boost by Schwarzenegger
Another favor from the gov to big timber players
Ukiah attorney John Behnke has become the third champion of Maxxam/Pacific Lumber to get a leg up thanks to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Behnke was appointed Judge of the Mendocino County Superior Court to replace retired Judge Henry K. Nelson.
Behnke, of the firm Carter, Behnke, Oglesby & Bacik, is a law partner to Jared Carter, long time vice president and lead counsel for Pacific Lumber, a company famous for clear-cutting old-growth redwoods and causing neighborhood-smashing landslides. Behnke himself has represented PL in several cases, including the high-profile fraud suit filed by Humboldt District Attorney Paul Gallegos, and PL’s SLAPP suits (or Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) filed against residents opposed to PL’s logging. He also represented PL’s lead treesitter remover, Eric Schatz, in a case against an activist.
Since taking office, Schwarzenegger has appointed two PL representatives to the California Environmental Protection Agency. Jim Branham was PL’s head of external relations before being tapped shortly after the recall election that put Schwarzenegger in office. The governor also appointed Ruthann Schulte, former “Environmental Stewardship Director” for PL, to become advisor to the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
