Popular, Alternative and independent Communication in the in the "Other Campaign".

by por la sexta
Independent Media proposal for the Other Campaign, Mexico.
The alternative media present in this session of the first meeting of "The Other Campaign" feel that the terrain of communication and information is vital to achieve the proposals of this initiative. It must not be forgot that private and official control of the media is one of the principal pillars of the authoritarian system in Mexico and the world. For this reason the struggle for the democratization and liberation of information and communication is an indispensable prerequisite of the construction of the society that we desire.

En this sense the work of alternative media to assume our social responsibility, even while persecuted by present legislation, has been an important part of the movement for democracy and social autonomy.

Now that we join the call of the "Sixth Declaration of the Selva Lacandona", we are conscience that we will face a boycott and the campaigns of disinformation of the established commercial media. We have initiated this discussion in order to respond to this situation and generate the forms of popular contra-information that permit us to come to know the distinct sectors of our society and the advance of this movement of national liberation. We think that this is possible if we come together and generate a national and international strategy grounded in this movement.

Now that we have initiated the discussion, we make the following points as the basis of a call to a debate to be realized in the following weeks:

1. The last five years have generated within the social movement an ample movement of popular and independent communication. Many networks of this movement of alternative media now unite for the Sixth and for the Other Campaign.

2. At the moment, one of the principal points diffusion of information about the Sixth and the Other Campaign is the web site "chiapas.indymedia.org." We propose the elaboration of a more ample web page, that as a red of collectives of popular communication takes the name "mexico.mediosindependiedentes.org"

3. We consider that communication is not the priority of professional specialization. On the contrary we believe that every collective or organization should have a commission dedicated to the media. All media for everyone and by everyone.

4. We propose that in every community visited by the Other Campaign, a commission of media be formed that divulges locally this initiative and that makes known the local activities for the Sixth. To the extent possible, alternative media centers be formed that, once formed, take on a life of their own.

5. In order to aid in the previous, as a red of popular communication for the Sixth, we put at the disposition to whom asks for it capitation and support for the creation of print, radio, video and web pages among other things.

6. In order to accompany this process we propose to realize an inventory of human, material and technical resources the distinct collectives and organizations that enter in this network may avail themselves of, and so we continue walking together.

7. Finally, we want to say that thanks to the work of many, people from this community and other places, involved in independent and participatory media, we have achieved a small transmission in Internet and FM from this meeting. This transmission arrived at the following places: Radio Samán, Radio Ambulante, la Ke Huelga, fuga.com, Movida Libertaria, Radio Livre de Brasil, Centro de Medios Libres del D.F., Radio Indymedia Global, Radio Guetza y Radio Plantón de Oaxaca. In addition we have notices that there are listeners in Barcelona, Extremadura, Yucatán, París, Baja California, Estado de México, el Istmo, D.F., San Francisco, Nuevo México, Puerto Rico, Israel, Sevilla, Málaga, Valencia, País Vasco, Sao Paolo, Guyana, Río de Janeiro, Chicago, San Diego, Buenos Aires, and Rosario, among others.
