Anarchists Riot against Greek Fascist Demonstration
September 18, 2005
A demonstration planned by the Greek fascist organization “Golden Dawn” in Athens yesterday was blocked by hundreds of anarchists who constructed barricades in the streets and attacked riot police who were guarding the 100 fascists that had gathered.
Confrontations between anarchists and cops lasted all night, as anti-authoritarians burned Greek flags, smashed shop windows, and threw firebombs at two Athens police stations. Riot cops fired tear gas in retaliation. Corporate media sources reported some 50 arrests over the street battles.
The Greek fascists had been planning for a large festival of right-wingers from across Europe, but were stifled by protests in many Greek cities and towns.
