Semi-poor guy wants to move to SF area

I'd like to move to the SF bay area soon, but I've heard horror stories about the cost of living there and the competition for jobs. I'm thinking Oakland/East Bay area would be good to save money on rent, because SF proper has insane apartment prices. I am a semi-poor just-graduated-college guy with quite a bit of debt and late bills, so I need to know if I can hack it in SF or if places like Seattle would be a lot cheaper.

Portland, Oregon (where I'm coming from) is pretty cool, but finding a job isn't terribly easy and the super cloudy weather makes me clinically depressed in the winters.
