Free-wheelin' Censorship at Santa Cruz Indymedia

by Robert Thompson
How much room can trigger-happy censorship leave for actual dialogue?
Something disturbing is happening down in Santa Cruz. A current discussion of an upcoming dancehall show has garnered the attention not only of Indymedia users, but of free-wheelin' censors as well.

The question becomes: who keeps deleting responses to the Sizzla thread. And why? (I have noticed this to be a continuing problem with not only my posts, but others as well.) To me sich blatant and outrageous censorship is much more disturbing than Sizzla's asinine behavior (especially on a site that is dedicated to departing from the censorship of other media outlets). I feel admitting (and discussing) what goes on here is absolutely essential to this site's continued relevance. What gives Santa Cruz Indymedia?

To add to the follow-up discussion (which will likely be removed by said censors very shortly): http://santacruz.indymedia.org/newswire/display/18456/index.php

...and i saw the most offensive comments about queer people. It is not censorship for Indymedias to hide anti-queer statements. To be honest censoring all you people who want to kill gays lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people whether you're Christian Nazi fundamentalists, or Rastafari smoke a joint and kill a fag types, is the least i would do to you. In Jamaica and other places people are inspired by these words to actually killl poeple. This is not a debating club, folks, this is life and deatrh. People who advocate the murder of groups of people who have done them or anyone else no harm, and people who support them in the name of anti=censorship, should be removed from Indymedia, even in liberal tolerant Santa Cruz.
