Labor Day Campaign Kick Off
This Labor Day weekend marks the kick off of Labor's campaign to
defeat the Special Election attack on workers. Join union
members in your area for rallies, barbeques and other fun - and
important - events that remind us what being a union member is
all about. California workers and their families and friends
will mark the day by committing to work together in solidarity
to ensure that Proposition 75 is defeated on November 8.

New Poll: More Work To Be Done on Prop 75
A new poll by the PPIC shows the Governor with a 34 percent
approval rating, and all three initiatives he is sponsoring
running behind. But it also shows Prop 75, the Paycheck
Deception initiative, supported by a majority of voters. Prop
74, Schwarzenegger's punitive "teacher tenure" initiative, has
about 49 percent support. Proposition 76, the state budget cap
is supported by just 28 percent of likely voters.

Proposition 75 has the support of 58 percent of the likely
voters surveyed, with 33 percent opposed and 9 percent
undecided. If we are going to defeat Paycheck Deception, we will
have to make sure all union members and voters know the truth:
Prop 75 would make it a lot harder for workers to have a voice
in the political process, but wouldn't touch the Governor's big
business contributors. Business already outspends unions
24-to-1, and if this initiative passes it'll only get worse.

Join the campaign to defeat Prop 75 by signing up for precinct
walking or phone banking with your Central Labor Council this
Labor Day!

Workers Confront Governor on Minimum Wage Bill
Over 100 union members and low-wage workers confronted Gov.
Schwarzenegger at a fundraiser hosted by the Restaurant
Association in Los Angeles on Monday. Dozens of press were with
the group as they marched to the event and demanded to be heard
by the Governor. The workers, led by Martin Ludlow, head of the
LA Federation of Labor (pictured at right), criticized Gov.
Schwarzenegger's acceptance of money from the Restaurant
Association, a group that is lobbying the Governor to again veto
an increase in the minimum wage.

On Thursday, Assembly Bill 48, which would raise the minimum
wage from $6.75 to $7.75 and then index it, passed the Senate
Appropriations Committee. The bill now heads to the Senate
Floor, where it is expected to pass, and then on to the
Governor's desk for a signature or veto.
