September 1, SF: Muni Fare Strike
MUNI plans to raise the adult fare from $1.25 to $1.50 Raise Youth, Senior and Disabled Fares from 35 cents to 50 cents. Lay off 200 drivers and cut runs on 41 lines
NO MUNI FARE HIKE! NO MUNI SERVICE CUTS!
While politicians pick the pockets of MUNI riders, they give away millions to downtown corporations, and pay MUNI director Michael Burns $280,000 per year. MUNI wants us to PAY MORE to WAIT LONGER. We say NO WAY!
If MUNI raises the fare on September 1, as now planned, we should respond with a FARE STRIKE. In a fare strike, passengers ride the bus, but do not pay the fare.
Fare strikes work. Last year, a fare strike in Chicago prevented a planned fare hike. In 1998, a fare strike in Los Angeles stopped a fare hike and pressured LA to buy more busses to reduce overcrowding.
Working class people, students, seniors and the disabled depend on MUNI. Together we can stop the fare hike and service cuts.

Please pass this on.

=====================
Hopefully you know about the fare strike planned for
this Thursday. (http://www.socialstrike.net)
This is really something to be really get excited about
and it is an action that _YOU_ should be involved in
if you care about starting small and building big, if
you care about seeing people mobilize in collective
mass actions - not to ask for a favor or demonstrate an
opinion - but to step right up and seize what we
demand, asserting the power we too often forget we have.
Concretely, we are asking for commitments, for people
to plug into a plan we have devised for Thursday --
the kickoff day. We to find as many folks as possible
who will get out there and agitate on Thursday
(and beyond) and remind people that "Yeah,
this thing we have been talking about is really
starting, today" and "Here, let me demonstrate how
the strike works by showing you how to board for free".
We are adopting an "each one teach one" strategy, in
which our agitation teams will show people how to
board and then ask those people to teach someone
else.
Get involved:
1) Commit to participate: email info [at] socialstrike.net
or call 415-267-4801 with the following
information, and we will get in touch with you. We
seriously need an RSVP - otherwise you wont learn
where the meet up spots are for the kickoff groups....
a) first name
b) email AND phone number
c) areas of san francisco you can conveniently get to
and the times you could be available (during the hours
of 7-10 AM and 3-6 PM)
d) how many people you can bring with you
2) Inform yourself fully about the strike by
visiting http://www.socialstrike.net
3) Forward this email to anyone you know who is
interested in helping out.
----
Please note that if you would like to be involved in
agitation efforts beyond the first of September, but cant
make it out for the kickoff, you can still sign up to help at
http://www.socialstrike.net/help.php

So, when do we give up anyway?
So, when do we give up anyway?
the point of a fare strike is not disruption, jackass! muni runs just as it normally would (hence, no disruption). muni drivers were instructed (BY MUNI) not to stop busses unless they felt uncomfortable, and most didnt.!
contrary to the lies spewed by the corporate media (i.e. "little disruption"), there were agitational crews at 8 major bus stops and definitely at least a few thousand MUNI riders refused to pay.
It is wrong to talk about this in the past tense. The strike is just beginning. We still refuse to pay. I personally road four busses yeaterday without spending a dime.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
