IDA EVENTS

IDA-Africa Founder Dr. Sheri Speede Speaks in San Francisco

IDA-Africa's Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in Cameroon provides a safe refuge for orphaned chimpanzees whose mothers were killed for bushmeat. Today, 47 adult, juvenile and infant chimpanzees live in extended family groups on the Center's vast tracts of enclosed forest where they are protected from hunters.

This summer, Dr. Speede has embarked on a nationwide tour to bring her urgent message of kinship and preservation directly to the American people. IDA-Africa is holding receptions in major cities where Dr. Speede will speak about her adventures on the front lines of the war against bushmeat, how IDA-Africa is combating this illegal trade, and what people in the U.S. can do to help the chimpanzees in Africa. She will also present a special video that documents life at the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, as well as offer her insights into the complex lives of great apes and their relevance to furthering our understanding of human behavior.

Join her this Saturday when she makes a rare appearance in San Francisco, and support IDA-Africa's vital effort to save endangered chimpanzees. Seating is limited, so make your reservation right away - you don't want to miss this special event.

When: Saturday, August 20, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Women's Building, 3543 18th Street (near Valencia), San Francisco (click http://womensbuilding.org/public/about/directions.html for directions)

If you are unable to attend the reception, you can donate to IDA-Africa or adopt/sponsor a chimpanzee at http://www.ida-africa.org/donations.html .

Julia Butterfly Hill and John Trudell Speak on Yellowstone Buffalo Slaughter

An estimated 30 to 60 million buffalo once roamed the North American continent, but only about 4,000 of these unique creatures survive today and their future is far from certain. Since 1985, the state of Montana has slaughtered 3,922 wild and free roaming buffalo using taxpayer funds provided by federal and state agencies. Every fall, winter and spring when Buffalo migrate into Montana or even near the border, the Montana Department of Livestock, the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks haze, capture and slaughter the Buffalo.

For the last eight years, over 2,200 volunteers from every state and many countries have stood with the Buffalo Field Campaign to save these endangered animals. Now activists Julia Butterfly Hill and John Trudell are helping to raise awareness of the buffalos' plight by hosting two special Bay Area presentations. Please join them and the Buffalo Field Campaign team for these IDA co-sponsored educational events that will include lecture, video, poetry and storytelling.

What: Buffalo Field Campaign Presentation with Julia Butterfly Hill
When: Wednesday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: College of Marin, Oleny Hall, Room 96, 835 College Avenue, Kentfield (click http://www.marincc.ca.us/com/directions.htm for directions)
Tickets are $10 purchased at the door.

What: Buffalo Field Campaign Presentation with John Trudell
When: Friday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Women's Building Auditorium, 3543 18th Street (near Valencia), San Francisco (click http://womensbuilding.org/public/about/directions.html for directions)
Tickets are $15 purchased at the door.

Weekly Anti-Fur Demonstrations at Neiman Carcass

Every Sunday afternoon, members of the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade-San Francisco (CAFT-SF) educate thousands of tourists and residents about the inherent cruelty of fur production. Using creative displays and informative leaflets, activists expose what happens on fur farms in the U.S. and overseas in China, where there are no animal cruelty laws and workers commonly skin living, conscious animals.

What: Weekly CAFT-SF anti-fur demonstrations
When: Every Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Where: In front of the Neiman Marcus store in Union Square, San Francisco (click http://tinyurl.com/bnc5n for directions)

Signs and literature are provided. For the sake of ethical consistency and effective communication, please avoid wearing leather (or anything that looks like leather) at the protest.
