Greed in Computer Recycling?

by Chris Taylor Thu, Aug 18, 2005 12:07PM
With lucractive state subsidies and the opportunity to resell valuable commodities, computer recycling is attracting all types- some of whom have criminal backgrounds and sketchy finances. One such recycler, ACCRC, has a 990 tax form that reads like a mystery novel. The proprietor, James Burgett, an ex-heroin addict, works full-time with his non-profit but draws only a $3,451 annual salaray. Since living on such a pittance is impossible in the Bay Area, where does the rest of the income come from? ACCRC has pulled in over $2 million over the last few years from accepting donated computers and reselling them. That may provide a hint.
