At least 1,000 expected to attend area Cindy Sheehan support vigils tonight;
More than 1,600 vigils set across U.S.
SSACRAMENTO - At least 1,000 people opposed to the war in Iraq are
expected - nearly that many have registered online - to attend candlelight
vigils Wednesday night in the Sacramento area to support the Bush Ranch
protest by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a Vacaville soldier killed in the
war.
The largest vigil is scheduled WEDNESDAY at 7:30 p.m. in front of
Sacramento's Old City Hall (I Street, between 9th & 10th).
It will be the largest public display ever in the Sacramento area against
the war - the number of those registering online for the vigils approached
1,000 as of Wednesday afternoon, with many others expected to attend who
have not logged on to the website.
Sacramento has at least 518 registered online to attend, Davis (Central Park
vigil at 7:30 p.m.) has 206 already registered. Smaller vigils are set in
Roseville, West Sacramento, Carmichael and Citrus Heights range from 2 to 50
people.
Nationwide, the number of vigils Wednesday stands at more than 1,600 - and
growing, nearly one vigil for every U.S. service member killed in the Iraq
War.
"W will acknowledge the sacrifices made by Cindy Sheehan, her son, Casey and
the more than 1,800 brave American men and women who have given their lives
in Iraq-and their moms and families," said Benjamin Sher in Sacramento.
"Sacramento vigilers will also be asking City Councilmembers and Mayor Fargo
to take action on a resolution calling for withdrawal from Iraq at this
time. No more mothers should have to lose sons or daughters in Iraq. It's
time to bring our valiant young men and women home," added Sher.
