Update about the Campaign Against Aerial Spraying - Kim Glazzard of Organic Sacramento:

Below is a an updated version of an action alert that went out about the current aerial
spraying for West Nile Virus-infected mosquitoes.  Another quick update is
my understanding they may spray at least one area in the south, bordered
by Elk Grove Blvd. to the south, Sutterville Rd. to the north, Watt Ave.
on the east, and I-5 on the west, as soon as tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday
night.  It sounds like they may do this for three days as well.  Everyone
should plan to attend the meeting tomorrow night at the County Board of
Supervisors, 700 H Street, 1st floor at 6:30 (see below).  This is
something that will not go away without significant public input and
pressure.  There have, and still are, legal efforts that have been tried,
so this is being addressed on all levels, but we have to do our part.

Besides my objection to aerial spraying, an overriding concern is the
deliberate lack of public input in this process, not to mention public
notification.  We Sacramentans are being summarily excluded.  At any rate,
we need to be part of this process, and not just have this "done to us."

Also, I hope to mobilize on this issue at the Farm Dance on Saturday
evening (see our website at http://www.organicsacramento.org for specific
information on the Farm Dance), so I hope everyone comes who can.  Also -
great news - is that Ignacio Chapela will be st the Farm Dance Saturday
night to update us on his situation, and what he knows about the GE
situation in general.  We are also trying to get someone to give an update
on the precarious state legislation situation - so this should be an
amazing night.

At any rate, I hope everyone keeps up their spirits and realizes there are
many efforts out there to get as much accountability and responsibility on
this situation as possible, however we have to keep up the momentum.  Hope
to see everyone tomorrow night and Saturday !!

Aerial Spraying Action Alert: Updated 8/10/05

1. Call your County Supervisor and City Council person and tell them to
stop  the aerial spraying of pyrethrum.  This chemical kills mosquitoes
and ALL  other insects, warnings for it include NOT to put
in on human skin, and it can cause pulmonary problems.  There are
alternatives to spraying the entire county, including: advising risk
groups like the elderly to take precautions to avoid mosquitoes; educating
the medical community & public about signs and symptoms of West Nile
Virus; increasing mosquito predators, etc.  There are a number of measures
people can take to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes and if they do get
bitten, they need to know what are the signs and symptoms of complications
of West Nile virus and when to get themselves to a medical facility.

2. Sign An On-line Petition Opposing the Spraying (from Eve Bowers)

We need some help getting the word out. Please sign this petition and
spread  it far and wide.
There is no science to support this method. The scare tactics are
manipulative, deceitful, and dangerous.

Petitioning. We have an online petition - but we could also use people
petitioning their neighborhoods and groceries, etc. Here's the online
petition. A copy of the paper petition is attached.
http://www.petitiononline.com/Mosquito/petition.html

We'd like to have people join our discussion group - we have a lot of
information online about why the spraying is a bad idea and how to help
stop it. It's http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fighttheflight/

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  I believe that spraying is
just too risky for the small, short-term benefit it may have.
