Aerial Spraying Alert: Council Meeting Tonight/Vector Control Meeting 8/11

by Dan Bacher (danielbacher [at] hotmail.com)
I urge everybody to attend the Sacramento City Council meeting tonight, where the Vector Control District will make a presentation on aerial spraying, and the public meeting of the Vector Control District on Thursday at 6:30 pm.
Sacramentans,

The Sacramento Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District started spraying Sacramento County north of the American River last night. The district will make a presentation to the Sacramento City Council at their 7 pm meeting tonight. The public has not yet had an adequate opportunity to be heard on this public health emergency!

Please attend and express your opposition to the aerial spraying for adult mosquitoes! The meeting will be at City Hall – 915 I Street, First Floor, Council Chambers.

Then, the Mosquito Abatement District is having another public meeting on Thursday, August 11th, at 6:30 pm in the County Board Chambers of the County Administration building at 7th and H Streets. Please attend the meeting - and spread the word to everybody you know!

If you have questions, call Kim Glazzard at (916) 455-8415.

Here’s other actions you can participate in. I urge everybody to get the word out about the opposition to the spraying.

1. Call your County Supervisor and City Council person and tell them to stop the aerial spraying of pyrethrum. This chemical kills mosquitoes and ALL other insects, warnings for it include NOT to put
in on human skin, and it can cause pulmonary problems. There are
alternatives to spraying the entire county, including: advising risk groups
like the elderly to take precautions to avoid mosquitoes; educating the
medical community & public about signs and symptoms of West Nile Virus;
increasing mosquito predators, etc. There are a number of measures people
can take to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes and if they do get bitten,
they need to know what are the signs and symptoms of complications of West
Nile virus and when to get themselves to a medical facility.

2. Sign An On-line Petition Opposing the Spraying (from Eve Bowers)

We need some help getting the word out. Please sign this petition and spread it far and wide.
There is no science to support this method. The scare tactics are manipulative, deceitful, and dangerous.

Petitioning. We have an online petition - but we could also use people petitioning their neighborhoods and groceries, etc. Here's the online petition. A copy of the paper petition is attached. http://www.petitiononline.com/Mosquito/petition.html

We'd like to have people join our discussion group - we have a lot of information online about why the spraying is a bad idea and how to help stop it. It's http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fighttheflight/

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I believe that spraying is just too risky for the small, short-term benefit it may have.

Another factor is that people living outside of Sacramento will also be effected by the pesticide drift. This includes the farms of Butte, Sutter, Colusa, etc. and other counties to the north of Sacto due to prevailing northerly wind conditions. Nobody asked if we wanted the coating of pesticide residue on our food crops and surroundings either!!

The effectiveness of ariel spraying is also questionable. Most of the spray chemicals probably fell on the leaf canopy of overhanging branches instead of the lowest point of surface water. Combine that with rooftops, cars, lawns, doorhandles, etc. you get the point. Pesticide residue coats everything and doesn't discriminate..

The pesticide corporations got their financial shot in the arm by the promotion of spraying toxic chemicals as an ineffective alternative to promoting a healthy ecosystem where mosquitos are kept to a minimum level by the counterbalance presence of beneficial predators like dragonflies, frogs, etc..

Not to mention the negative effects of pesticide residue on the human immune system doesn't help someone battling West Nile Virus. Another toxin (pesticide residue) in addition to the petrochemical smog, fast food, and other human immune system depressents doesn't help people, just another poison for our bodies to fight..
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
