~ON THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR II,
UNITE ACROSS 60 CITIES AROUND THE WORLD~
Bay Area Women and Allies Unite on the 8.10 Global
Action Day at the footsteps of the San Francisco
Japanese Consulate
On this day of action, people from around the world
will come together and join surviving grandmothers in
South Korea and the Korean Council for the Women
Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan in their
struggle for justice. Since 1992, they have protested
every Wednesday in front of the Japanese Embassy in
Seoul demanding an official apology and legal
compensation from the Japanese government.
We will stand in global solidarity against violence
against women and the grandmothers whose tears have
not dried in 60 years.
To restore their honor and dignity, we will demand:
l Japan must pay legal compensation to the survivors;
l Implement recommendations made by the United Nations
and the International Labor Organization NOW!
l Justice to the victims of the Japanese military
sexual slavery!
WHEN: Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Rally begins at 4:30pm
March begins at 5:30pm
WHERE: Front of the San Francisco Japanese Consulate,
50 Fremont St. (b/w Market and Mission)
SPEAKERS: Come listen to words of wisdom and
solidarity by
Sug Ok Shin, acclaimed human rights activist and
author from Tokyo
Yuri Kochiyama, freedom fighter
∑and more!
SOUND & RHYTHM: Also featuring Cultural Richness of
our communities:
Drumming and singing of Korean, Okinawan and Filipino
traditions∑ Come together in Rhythm and Spirit!
WEAR ALL WHITE: In the Korean tradition, where
majority of the Œcomfort women‚ are from, it is a
color of mourning. We share in the tears being shed by
all victims of violence against women!
