Perhaps they can get a job. Or go where the jobs are. Sitting around whining and expecting the taxpayers to take of them isn't going to work.

Perhaps jj does not live in the world that the rest of us live in, where there are not enough jobs for everyone, and even if you do get a job (or two), it doesn't pay enough to cover all the basic needs, including housing.

And besides, jobs suck. You work all the time, for what? Whose interest are working for? Where does the money go that your labor brings in? REAL work doesn't pay in dollars. Doing what's right just isn't honored in the capitalist system.

Fortunately, there are people who realize this and are coming together to live differently, beyond the slave-mentality paradigm that "jj" offers.

And as far as "tax-payers' dollars" goes, it's the tax-payers' dollars that are paying for excessive policing that targets the homeless and WASTES money writng citations for non-crimes such as sleeping in public places, having a dog in public places, smoking in an open park. So, you see, jj, IT WOULD SAVE TAX_PAYERS' MONEY TO STOP POLICE ABUSE AGAINST UNHOUSED PEOPLE!!!

It seems that Arcata and its residents, along with the misguided students, are the cause for this homelessness. The liberals and crazed left winged bigots thought that they could use the lack luster university, seasonal non residential, students to make political change---how wrong they were. You dumb-dumbs were only half right. So now you have an explosive homeless factor, no jobs for anyone, with what little work here. What work is here pays very very little for the experience people can bring to the table. It's become so backwards that unless you're homeless, or retired, from Berkley, then you can't afford to live here. How can one be homeless and afford anything you might ask? Well just look at Fourth street market the gathering of homeless people and their chump change for "enlightenment" firewater.
On the other hand you can get on welfare. If you want to take a handout from Uncle Sam then complain about the uncle that just feed you seems to be the logic used in Arcata---typical backwards liberal thought. I hope to God that the bum's completely destroy this community and the working class comes back. You reap what you sow people get a clue your street's look like crap the house are falling apart and there isn't any work other than the University--- and that's last on the CSU system!! HSU is placed 23 out of 24 CUS to be at. What other than old growth does this area have to offer? Weed and bums and "progressive" thought and yoga classes wow I can get all this back home in Carmel where it's safe clean fun and sunny!!! Also we too have old growth, but we don't have the bums and dirty hippies that do nothing but bitch and complain about the US while they wait in line for their welfare checks. This place is a joke. wake up the tide is changing all over the US.

Thornton’s analysis also lacking

In Thornton’s drunken cyber-rant, he refers to “left winged bigots” as the cause for homelessness, blaming students trying to “make political change.” Interesting theory, but I would need to see more support for this conclusion. It seems more likely that it’s the systematic destruction of the forest environment that used to sustain a logging industry, along with the inconcievably large federal debt, that is making it harder for more and more people to keep up with the cost of basic needs, including housing, thus multiplying the number of unhoused people, unemployed people, and people who just can’t find a way to make all their ends meet.

As for all the complaints about Arcata from this disgruntled Humboldt State University student (judging by the email address), unless you’re on probation or something then you can leave if you want, right? If you are on probation, or are feeling the pinch of the economy, why not focus your energy on those who are oppressing you instead of blaming homeless people for your problems?
If you really think that misuse of so-called welfare is an issue, then look at corporate welfare and the military budget to find those who are really leaving the public’s purse empty.

Does Thronton really think that the “bums and dirty hippies” do nothing but “bitch and complain”?

Houselessness, the lack of space to be, is a violation of human rights. This isnt something that should be politizised and argued about. At this point it is criminal to simply, be, in Arcata, as well as most of the major and minor cities in the loosley conjoined cooperate ruled states, run by people who have alot more money than any of the mutants that post here.

The city council of Arcata, the local para-millitary (the fuzz), and the political system at large have left the enfrigned (this is how it begins; they target the outsides of the society destroying all desent; look at hitler, mussilini, and chairman mao for more examples of this)
