Criminal Charges on Maribel Cuevas are Dropped, Struggle Continues...
Her attorneys report that Maribel and her family are hugely relieved that the Fresno police department's felony assault charges against Maribel were dropped on August 3, 2005. The family looks forward to recuperating for the rest of the summer before school starts up again for Maribel. On August 11, it will be five years since Executive Order 13166 went into effect. This act, known as the Language Rights Act, is aimed at "Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English." What do we tell the children of Fresno when their Police Department continually violates the Language Rights Act? What do we tell the Children of Fresno when the Juvenile Justice System continues to discriminate against them? When the Fresno police sentenced a child to not see her parents for five days and then force her to wear an ankle monitor for a month prior to any court hearing? Who are acting ex officio as the real judges in Fresno County? What do we tell the Children when the district attorney uses public funds which "all taxpayers of all races contribute to" when they chose to prosecute a child over the children's squabble. What message are we sending when it is well-documented how groups of boys taunting a girl!
We call for the United States Department of Justice to investigate violations of Title 6 of the Civil Rights Act and failure to adequately implement the Language Rights Act.
We call for California's Attorney General to provide leadership and to ensure that US laws are being applied fairly. We demand justice for Maribel and many other People of Color.

We stand before you in support of Maribel and many others like her in the City and County of Fresno.
It has been almost 42 years since President John F. Kennedy said in 1963 when pushing the Civil Rights Act's.
"Simple justice requires that public funds, to which all taxpayers of all races [colors, and national origins] contribute, not be spent in any fashion which encourages, entrenches, subsidizes or results in racial [color or national origin] discrimination."
On August 11, it will be five years after the President signed Executive Order 13166, "Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English" Otherwise known as the Language Rights Act.
What do we tell the children of Fresno when their Police Department continually violates the Language Rights Act?

Maribel should have never been taken to Juvinelle Hall in the 1st Place. Is this story really over? Will we find out what the internal investigation uncovered?

I went throught the adventure of filing a complaint against FPD. 1st off, they had no complaint forms, or even knew of them at the 1st 2 public locations, so I had to go to headquarters and request one. I then hand-delivered one copy back to headquarters, and certified-mailed the other to Chief Dyer. After 2 months and no word, they claimed that no one by my name had filed a complaint (even though the certifed letter had been signed for). An investigation by Internal Affairs (after much bitching by myself and others)declared my complaint was unsubstantiated (what a surprize). It involved FPD refusing to investigate cruelty to animals by a neighbor of mine-though he was able to get the police to come tell me to "stop harrassing him" just for asking him about it.
