FOSTER CITY — A 33-year-old man who ran from police following a minor traffic stop Monday night drowned in the Marina Lagoon while trying to make his escape, authorities said.
Divers plucked Troy William Guido's body from the lagoon around 10:30 p.m., more than five hours after an officer pulled him over, Foster City Police Capt. Jon Froomin said.
After suspecting a registration problem with the Buick Century that Guido was driving, the officer tried to pull him over near Edgewater and Emerald Bay roads, Froomin said, but Guido continued driving until he entered the Residence Inn parking lot on Windward Way in San Mateo.
There, Guido got out of his car, looked back at the officer, then jumped over a fence and ran off, Froomin said, leaving two passengers in the vehicle.
A witness saw Guido swimming in the lagoon, struggling and calling for help, and jumped in to try to save him. But Guido disappeared beneath the surface.
Police arrested one of the passengers

in Guido's car on suspicion of drug possession and for outstanding warrants. The second passenger was interviewed and released.
Police are not sure why Guido, who had addresses in San Mateo, Redwood City and Foster City, ran.
According to court records, Guido had a history of misdemeanor convictions and was on probation for a drug offense at the time of his death.
On March 24, Guido was arrested again on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs but was released on his own recognizance. He was scheduled for a pre-trial conference Aug. 19.
