The California Coalition Against Poverty conducts a direct action against Oakland/Berkeley Slumlord.
Oakland, CA. About 20 members of the Oakland Community gathered last Friday, July 15th at 4:30 pm at the office of Ellen E.S. Rodin, a real state lawyer and landlord, on 1611 Telegraph Avenue, Suite 1030 in downtown Oakland to express the community's indignation at the illegal, intimidatory, and unfair actions that she has taken against several of her tenants including illegal lock outs, threats of physical violence, unlawful retentions of security deposits, etc.
Before heading to her office on the 10th floor, California Coalition Against Poverty (CCAP) volunteers engaged in conversations and passed out fliers to every single tenant of the corporate building where Ms Rodin works. Many of these groups were quite concerned about Rodin's slumlord actions and promised to give her a call regarding these matters.
Apparently, Rodin had been alerted by the Oakland Police Department that CCAP was planning an action in her office (a police car was sent to monitor it) and she took off before the community members reached her but she left a letter addressed to CCAP on her office's door. The letter contained non factual information about the community claims but said that she agreed to drop any supposed "damages" she felt the tenants owed to her if they agreed to drop the matter entirely. She quantified these alleged damages at $1400.
After reading the letter, CCAP decided to organize a picket line in front of the main entrance of the building. Holding signs reading "ELLEN E.S. RODIN The Community is Watching," "Shame on ELLEN E.S. RODIN Notorious Slumlord" and "si vivir es un privilegio, okupar es un derecho," children, women, workers, and students organized several chants accompanied by the sounds of cacerolas (pots).
Many Oakland drivers expressed their solidarity with the action by honking their car horns and waving at the protesters. Several tenants of the building came down from their offices to ask more information about the case. At the peak of the action, several children from the neighborhood created their own chants celebrating the lifes of working people and condemning the actions of those who exploit us.
The California Coalition Against Poverty will continue its campaign until Ms Rodin agrees to reach a fair agreement with her tenants. Feel like giving Ms Rodin a call? She can be
