Bad Week for Governor Schwarzenegger

More Trouble - The Governor faced more trouble this week
following a the revelation that he had a multi-million dollar
contract dependent on advertising for nutritional supplements-
an industry Schwarzenegger helped last year by vetoing a bill to
regulate supplements. Before public outcry had died down over
the first scandal, the San Francisco Chronicle reported another
ethics breach - the Governor taking advantage of a loophole in
campaign finance laws to collect rent from political action
committees that he controls.

Contempt of Court! - A state judge threatened Tuesday to hold
the Schwarzenegger administration in contempt of court for
repeatedly trying to overturn new nurse-patient staffing ratios
in violation of a court ruling.

Hospital safety regulations were set to take effect on Jan. 1,
2005 that set staffing ratios of five patients per nurse in
medical-surgical areas and four patients per nurse in emergency
rooms. The Schwarzenegger administration has issued three
emergency executive orders suspending the patient safety law.

Call to a Special Convention on August 16

With the November 8 special election, the Governor and his
allies have declared war on working people in California. Labor
will be holding a convention on Tuesday, August 16 to vote on
our positions for the special election. We will vote on ballot
initiatives, consider making an early endorsement for Governor,
and take up a proposal for building union strength in
California.

We need your help to map our strategy to defeat Proposition 75,
an anti-union initiative similar to Pete Wilson's "Paycheck
Deception" measure, which required a massive effort to defeat in
1998. Prop 75 would destroy our ability to defend our members.

One of the Governor's other anti-worker initiatives would allow
him to unilaterally declare a fiscal "state of emergency" and
slash funding for education, transportation and other services
Californians depend on. If these measures pass in the November 8
special election, the Governor could win an unprecedented power
grab and silence our voice!

It is crucial that you and your delegates join all of Labor in
this important convention. Please call the Oakland Hilton at
1-800-445-8667 and mention "California Labor Federation" to
reserve a room at the special rate of $129. Deadline for
reservations is August 4, 2005. For more information call
