Call to Protect Clinics

by Elizabeth Creely
Please read the update at http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/07/1754669.php as the location and nature of the 7/23 protest have changed.

The “Crusade for Life” plans to disrupt our community by harassing women at health clinics from July 15-27. We need your help to defend our clinics and to send the message that the Bay Area is pro-choice and stands up for reproductive rights!
The Bay Area is being targeted by Anti-Choice groups, such as Operation Rescue, precisely because we have a long standing tradition of honoring and protecting a woman's right to reproductive self determination. Please come out to defend our clinics and show our community. Not two weeks ago, a reproductive clinic in Florida was damaged by arson. We can't allow these attacks to continue. See the flyer below for dates/times ways to continue to protect women's health, human and civil rights.
GET INVOLVED.

Defend a Woman’s
Right to Choose!
Stop the anti-abortion “Crusade for Life”

Richmond on July 27.

• Drive by local reproductive health centers on a regular basis (especially at night) to ensure the safety of the facility.

These clinic bombing numbskulls certainly give the lie to the expression "pro-life". Now more than ever it's important to send a message that Roe v. Wade is not going away. The cost of losing Roe v. Wade? Young women's lives. Clinic bombers may think they can adopt all the babies. When are they going to let the mothers get birth control without fear of bodily harm??? Their only answer is that young women must "abstain". Get real!

Does anybody know more about the specifics of the schedule of Crusade, or of the defenders. I didn't know there were abortion clinics in Berkeley or Richmond. If not what are they supposed to do the days they are there (here)?

Appropriately enough, they were put up to this by the Catholic Church. Clutching pictures of the pope, they tried to shut down Planned Parenthood and failed. The only anti-choicers who showed up to meet us inititally were mostly old white men. One of these fine gentlemen thought he was being funny when he pretended to kick one of our number in the posterior. I guess violence towards women is part of the deal though, so I was hardly surprised.

The rest of the so-called "Crusade for Life" (as we know, actually a crusade for the death of women and their rights) were a group of young people who showed up late to the protest, wearing red shirts saying something like "you can't be Catholic and believe in abortion". Well hurrah, I'm not Catholic and I do believe in abortion. So do many Catholics.

Most of us got to Planned Parenthood at 8AM, and we stayed until the clinic closed. One was struck by the sanctimonious appearance by many of the young anti-choicers. They were constantly taking pictures and videos of themselves in prayer and singing hymns, and waving toy fetuses. It looked like many of them had spent to much time pretending to look like Christian martyrs. Look for a video release of "little red storm troopers" sometime soon (but not in a neighborhood near you)! They pretended to have a little die-in in front of the clinic, and were greeted with a chorus of songs and chants.

On our side were plenty of spririted young women and men, who had plenty to say about diversity, women's rights, gay rights and war. I was proud of them.

I'm so happy to hear that the Crusaders were greeted by a community organized to recognize and honor a woman's right to reproductive self determination. Let's keep it up! They will be here all week, and next week, will attack clinics in Oakland...we arent sure where exactly, but if/when we find out, we'll post it here.
And check out KPFA's "The Womens Show" at one o'clock on July 18th...they will be doing a show based on the recent escalation in clinic harrassment in the Bay Area.

press conference near but not at planned parenthood

call abortion what it is - the right to fuck up and not deal with the consequences. Don't give me this "reproductive rights" bullshit. No one get's pregnant so they can experience the "wonders of the abortion process.

because abortion is legal, women can go get hammered and let billybob, the town derilect, knock her up, and end the pregnancy, and not deal with the consequences. That is what it all boils down to.

believe it or not, I am pro-choice to an extent. as long as it's done early, I don't care. There are just too many stupid sluts and irresponsible men around, and I really don't want them raising kids. I'm also pro-choice in cases or rape, incest, or mothers life being in jeopardy.

But the late tem abortion, and no parental notification (not parental control) is wrong. Christ, I had to get mom and dad to sign a waiver when I wanted an earring when I was 16. My earlobe, my choice?

Bottom line, pro-choice women are sluts, and there are many stupid men around also.

And this is bad, why?
by mm
it is bad, but it's necessary, unfortunately.

not quite sure how to respond to this...what about accidents? where do you get the right to call people sluts and billybobs and derelicts? have you ever been in a car, and not worn a seatbelt? talked on the phone while driving? have you never made a mistake? drunk too much liquor? tried drugs?

my point is not to criticize you; rather to underscore the importance of reproductive freedoms. if a woman does not control what happens to her body, she is not free. furthermore, no one but she has the right to choose what happens to her...nor does anyone have the right to determine what lifelong consequences she must live with. no one uses abortion as a method of birth control.
