SUPPORT JUSTICE FOR JANITORS at the Downtown Oakland YMCA
SUPPORT JUSTICE FOR JANITORS at the Downtown Oakland YMCA
The Downtown Oakland YMCA has just replaced a responsible,
unionized janitorial firm that provided affordable family health
insurance and decent wages with a non-union company, Sky
Building Maintenance. Sky pays minimum wage, fails to provide
health insurance to their employees and has refused to follow
the state law that provides job security to sub-contracted
janitors. Three janitors, Luis Mendoza, Juan Diaz and Jose
Castillejos, are now out on the streets.
This decision runs completely counter to the value and mission
of the YMCA. Instead of working with Local 1877 to resolve these
issues, the YMCA has explicitly stated that it is not their
responsibility to ensure that their contractors provide decent
wage, health insurance or that they comply with the law.
