Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, leader of the Justice and Development Party, is one of Turkey's most popular politicians. Raised on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, Mr. Erdoğan played semi-professional football (soccer) for sixteen years, has a background in both secular and Islamic education, and is a leading figure in the Turkish bid to join the European Union.
