ABORTION in danger?
opinion about O'Connor retirement, July 1st
Surprising almost everyone, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has resigned
from the United States Supreme Court.
She was the first woman ever to serve on the nation's highest court. When she took her seat in 1981, she was considered conservative, by the standards of the Reagan era.
Since then, the U$A has moved much further right.
By the standards of this "terror era", she's considered moderate -- a "swing vote" on the court.
Often she has been on the winning side of 5-4 votes.
Bush will appoint a replacement this summer;
then the Senate must decide whether to confirm.
If Bush appoints a right-wing judge,
U.S. women could lose their federal right to abortion.
Women ( of all ages, orientations, colors, etc. ),
and allies,
need to wake up and mobilize.
