Sutton Impact: The Political Cartoons of Ward Sutton
A reading with Ward Sutton, celebrating the release of his new book on Seven Stories Press

For fans and first-timers, the best of the Village Voice political cartoonist.

A full-color trouncing of the Bush Dynasty from cult-favorite Village Voice cartoonist Ward Sutton, Sutton Impact brings together for the first time the artist's hilarious, irreverent social commentary and his vivid poster art. More than two hundred pieces document the flights and folly of an era, from politics to popular music, excoriating the USA PATRIOT Act, John Ashcroft's evangelical songwriting, the Democrats' domestic blunders and much more.

Sutton is one of the country's most acclaimed political cartoonists, in a group with Tom Tomorrow, David Rees, and Ted Rall. Sutton Impact includes a section of post-election cartoons from late 2004 and early 2005.

"I love Ward Sutton's smart, sharp, funny cartoons, In these grim horrific times, the satiric hilarity of Sutton Impact will cheer you up slightly. -Matt Groening, "The Simpsons"

"Ward Sutton's satire doesn't just bite, it maims. He's the perfect cartoonist for our discordant times." -Steven Colbert, The Daily Show

"If Ward Sutton wren't so creepily accurate with his cartoons, I would be doubled over with laughter still." -Joe Garden, The Onion

The Master’s Tools: How the Government Manipulates the Legal System to Suppress Dissent

Federal Investigators are stepping up their efforts to break apart social justice movements. In recent weeks, three separate grand juries have been convened to investigate activists from different movements.

Many people aren’t even aware of the functions of a Federal Grand Jury. This is something every person, activist or not, should be aware of. They are a violation of our constitutional rights.

Come find out how a grand jury operates, what your rights are, and how local activists are resisting this governmental abuse of power.

Speakers:
-Katya Komisaruk, author of Beat the Heat: How to Handle Encounters with Law Enforcement

-Scott Braley, long-time Bay Area social justice activist

-Local activists with Federal Grand Jury experience

52nd Anniversary of the start of the Cuban Revolution
Work and Revolution: a book reading and dramatization
An offsite event – location below

Intersection Independent Press Spotlight on two worker-run collectives: Freedom Voices Press and AK Press.

The evening is a dynamic dialogue between two grass roots presses via a featured reading and Intersection stage enactment from each press on the theme of work and revolution.

Ben Clarke, a founding member of Freedom Voices will talk about why and how the ideals of worker-collectives have influenced the development of their publications. Literary labor-advocate Margot Pepper will shed light on working in Cuba with excerpts from her new memoir, Through the Wall: A Year in Havana (FV May 1, 2005).

Lani Riccobuono, a collective member of AK Press, will talk about the importance of publishing and the role of propagating radical ideas in an era of reactionary politics.

Barry Pateman, anarchist historian and curator of the Emma Goldman Archive at UC Berkeley, will be reading from the book "The Voltairine de Cleyre Reader," for which he wrote the preface. Voltairine de Cleyre was one of the most important anarchist thinkers in early 20th-century America, and this is the first selection of her work published since 1914.

Both AK Press and Freedom Voices are celebrating their 15 year anniversaries!

Intersection's resident actors will dramatize an excerpted work from each press, including a piece from award-winning Native American poet Abena Songbird.
