Good Grade for Legislators - A GOOD GRADE FOR LEGISLATORS; Sacramento Acts to Protect Kids
Kids Aren't Lab Rats
This session the California Assembly passed AB 405, which amends the state education code to prevent the use of experimental chemicals and products in public schools. Public health advocates had become seriously alarmed by the prospect of companies exposing students to chemicals that that may have been tested for their killing power, but not for human health effects. Luckily, Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez (D) had the conviction and the courage to carry this bill, and successfully saw it through the Assembly.
The Assembly deserves special thanks for protecting this especially vulnerable segment of the public from products whose health effects are unknown
Pesticides contain toxic substances, many of which have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment. But they are especially hazardous to children. Because the physiology of children is constantly developing, chemical exposures that might be tolerable for adults can do serious damage to growing children and adolescents.
Aside from harming the immune and reproductive systems, the neurological systems of kids can be impacted -- ironically harming their ability to learn in the institution they are sent to be educated. The fact that threshold levels of pesticide exposure and health studies are currently based solely on an adult male of approximately 160 pounds underscores that children are counting on adults to protect them.
Students and teachers are not guinea pigs!
