Jn 14- KQED-FM responds swiftly to quake

Around 9pm on Tuesday night, June 14, the BBC broadcast on KQED-FM was interrupted by one of those emergency announcements. This time, the official voice said an earthquake had struck in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of northern California, near Crescent City; and that a tsunami might hit San Francisco around 9:23 pm. Then the BBC broadcast resumed.

Around 9:10pm, I phoned the KQED-FM Radio Newsroom and left a taped message,
asking them to go live with more local info.
Then I unplugged all my appliances except for one radio,
turned off my lights,
and waited nervously.

By 9:20pm, KQED-FM did go live, reporting that the tsunami warning had been cancelled.
Around ten minutes later, the local SF announcer gave a brief follow-up report.

So I called back, intending to leave a taped message of thanks.
This time, to my surprise, the newsroom phone was answered by a live human.

I'm very favorably impressed by how quickly this NPR station
got on top of an unexpected situation, which seemed like a crisis.
