KPFA Board Meeting LIVE
In conjunction with indybay.org, we will once again attempt to bring you a live KPFA Board meeting, this Saturday from Berkeley's Freight and Salvage
Live KPFA Board Meeting
This Sat, June 11, 11am
Berkeley progressive radio flagship, KPFA sadly, is once again in the throes of internal turmoil. Reports of violence and flying lawsuits seem to be pouring from the station on a weekly basis. The Station Board seems incapable of even crafting a simple statement condemning the violence. Meanwhile, stale and uninteresting programming is loosing listeners who now have the choices of a vibrant KALW, Air America Radio and newcommer, KPIG from Santa Cruz. New ideas in programming also seem to be headed nowhere. Proposals for new labor programming, flounder, as weak management lacks both the skill and courage to make the necessary changes. KPFA has always been a leader in community and progressive programming. This mission is now in a state of crisis. For more on the stations problems see: http://www.indybay.org/labor/

The crisis is that the Pacifica 1949 mission statement is dangerously outdated. We have a historical task to be fully human and any of the present multiple blocks are OPPRESSIVE.to this essential task. Our task is therefore to REMOVE these blocks to achieve LIBERATION. Protesting, elections and voting under our wealth and privilege promoting 1787 CONSTITUTION that allows wealth and privilege to cancel these actions has put shackles on the power of WE THE PEOPLE.to struggle for real DEMOCRACY PACIFICA is thereby riddled with violence and self serving staffers who are preventing any possibility for organizing
for LIBERATION and following the example of the VENEZUELAN and BOLIVIAN people to organize to replace their CONSTITUTIONAL shackles with a new one that empowers WE THE PEOPLE instead of the GANGSTERS.

KPFA has real problems, but losing listeners is not one of them (the main problems are labor problems). KPFA is consistently bringing in increasing numbers of listeners -- in fact, KPFA's listeners have doubled since 1995. That's an astounding figure. While listenership falls for radio in the US as a whole, it is increasing for at KPFA. Additionally, the station continues to pull in $1 million fund drives. So while you can legitimately criticize KPFA for all sorts of internal problems, let's keep things accurate.
However, it seems in the interests of Brightpath to say that the programming is stale and listeners aren't interested because particular unnamed people associated with Brightpath would like to have a regular labor show on KPFA. In other words, if KPFA just let's certain people on the air, all of the stations problems are solved. What's ironic is that these "labor programmers" don't seem to give a damn about the labor conditions of the workers at the station.
