CA must beat amendment in June 2006
One queer's opinion: Chalk up Assembly vote on Leno bill as near-win.
Now look toward June 2006 election,
when we must beat fascist amendment which bans domestic partnerships (as well as gay marriages).

CAL marriage bill falls SIX VOTES SHORT
June 1-2, Wed.-Thurs.:
As of Thursday morning, 8 AM,
KQED-FM public radio says the Leno bill fell six votes short.
Apparently there were two votes so far (as of Thurs. morn);
with 35 voting Yes, 37 No, and several Democrats abstaining.
A third vote MAY occur on Thursday or Friday.
The following Chron story, dated June 2, may already be slightly obsolete;
(as the situation may have continued changing late into the night,
past the Chron's press time?).

[ Preliminary COMMENTARY by Tortuga Bi Liberty,
as of 2 June 2005, Thursday, 0830AM: ]
In California,
major reform bills often take several sessions to become law;
with support increasing each year.
That's basically a good thing.
The process gradually unifies the legislators,
and gradually prepares the public to accept the new law.
Pro-marriage queers and allies
shouldn't view the recent Assembly vote as a defeat.
Instead, it's like a tide rising on Baker Beach --
in a series of small waves,
the water gradually reaches further up the sand,
until it reaches its goal.
So we should congratulate Assemblyman Mark Leno
on his success in 2005.
His bill's legislative prospects will gradually get better
in future sessions.
MEANWHILE,
after Friday ( 3 June 2005),
we should turn our attention to
defeating the fundi-fascist amendment to our state constitution.
This extreme overkill would ban domestic partnerships,
as well as same-sex marriages.
It will probably appear on the June 2006 California primary ballot.
The more Cal voters learn about the exact terms of this amendment,
the less they will like it.
I think a majority of California voters favor domestic partnerships,
even tho a majority of voters may not be ready for marriage.
( This is a generational issue.
So voter opinion shifts gradually toward tolerance,
as new young voters (turning 18) replace old voters. ) ]
